'Silicon Valley' Season 6 Episode 2 wasn't the 1st time Jared tried to resign but Richard insulting Gwart may have crossed a line
In episode 2 of ‘Silicon Valley’ Season 6, Jared Dunn (Zach Woods) handed Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) his resignation from PiedPiper. He said, “PiedPier isn’t the same company I signed up for. She has different needs now, and so do you. And, it turns out, so do I.”
Things between Jared and Richard only sour from there onwards -- Richard calls him a “buddy f*cker” and Jared later shoots him in the butt with an air gun. But this is not the first time Jared resigned, or at least tried to. So what makes it different this time?
In the finale of the show’s fourth season, ‘Server Error’, the show’s resident empath and PiedPiper's voice of conscience, Jared, felt things had gotten way out of hand. Jared wanted Richard to take responsibility for Hooli’s exploding phones.
Richard, of course, being Richard, disagreed. Jared then told him, “I write three letters whenever I start a job: a personal action plan, a letter to my 40-year-old self, and a resignation letter,” before handing him the resignation letter.
Even back then, Richard was cruel to Jared. He asked him to serve the two-week notice period. Of course, in the meanwhile, in Jared’s absence, Richard, Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) and Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani) made matters worse for the company.
Ultimately, in a measure that reeked more of self-preservation than any kind of earnestness, Richard apologized to Jared. “I didn’t run this company with integrity,” he said. “But I can end it with some.” Jared then returned to his post.
His cruelty back then, however, was no match for what he had since become. Richard, over time, distanced himself from Jared. But it didn’t end there. After Jared’s resignation, he went so far as to make fun of Gwart, with whom Jared decided to work, after his time at PiedPiper.
And that is where he crossed the line, a line that the ever-so-nice Jared may have refused to acknowledge so far. It seems unlikely at best that Jared would forgive Richard easily.
Given the show’s past trends, however, Jared will ultimately be the bigger man. Richard’s transgressions may ultimately be forgiven, but it doesn’t look like things will ever go back to normal.
New episodes of ‘Silicon Valley’ premiere Sundays at 10 p.m. on HBO.
