Shooting at Chicago PD: Man with lengthy criminal history shot in the face after he interrupts SWAT training
Update: Chicago police shot a man who climbed five flights of a fire escape and barged into a training exercise at the CPD facility on the West Side according to CPD Supt. David Brown. Members of the CPD’s SWAT team were conducting a training exercise on the fifth floor of the building around 11.30 am on Monday, September 26.
The room only had a propped open door and had no windows so the offender had entered through the door, startling the team in training. The intruder was reportedly picking up personal property from the evidence collection center at the Homan Square when the incident took place.
The team under training had placed their weapons on a table and little did the intruder know that their guns did not contain live rounds but had been armed with rubber pellets, reports Daily Mail. The unnamed man grabbed two of the weapons and pointed them at officers, who shot him in the face with live rounds in retaliation. Brown said the guns were being watched by the officers as the weapons were constantly being transitioned from live rounds to simulations. They could have been empty to being loaded with simulations, clarified Brown. It's not known whether the officers involved in the SWAT training knew that the guns used by the intruder contained rubber pellets. An investigation is underway by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA).
While earlier it was reported that he was severely injured, latest reports state that the man is recovering from 'non-life-threatening injuries'. Brown has stated that the man who was shot had a 'lengthy' criminal history of arrests including charges of burglary and drugs. No name has been revealed as yet. During the press briefing, Brown said one officer suffered a twisted ankle and that no one else was injured.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: A person has been shot and severely injured, while a Chicago police officer has also suffered a gunshot in a shooting at Homan Square where the Chicago Police Department facility is located.
The incident took place at the Homan Square evidence building, on the fifth floor, which dominantly comprises different Chicago PD units managing investigating gang crime. The person has been sent to Stroger Hospital in a critical state, as per Chicago Fire Department spokesperson. And the officer was rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center, with the extent of the injury still unknown.

The shooting took place around noon time, and currently, a heavy police presence is at the scene to take control of the situation. The identity of the suspect remains unknown for the time being. Circumstances of the shooting are yet to be established, and the Chicago PD team is expected to brief the media at around 3 pm. The shooting is now being investigated by the agency, confirmed the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. The Homan facility also houses the CPD SWAT Team.
