'Shazam! Fury of the Gods': Critics call Zachary Levi starrer DCU film 'hilarious, entertaining and epic'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' release date is right around the corner, however, critics have passed their own judgement as of now. It is one of the highly anticipated movie of this year. As it release right after Marvel released 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,' let's just say the competition is intense. However, considering all of the critic's reviews there is no reason one needs to fret. Although it is the 12th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), this is the first DC release of 2023, which is why the marketing has been boosting up in the past weeks, with the studio releasing new trailers and character posters for the 'Shazam' family. 

'Shazam's sequel is helmed by David F. Sandberg and written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. The DCEU superhero film stars Zachary Levi as the title character, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, Lucy Liu, Djimon Hounsou, and Helen Mirren.

Shazam family versus Daughters of Atlas

Starting with 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' in March, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have a full slate of new DC movies planned despite the WB shakeups and cancelation of multiple DC movies and shows. The 2023 DC movie trajectory is a mix of established and new faces, and the potential upcoming DC movies for 2024 onward will likely feature even more movies concentrating on characters outside the 'Justice League' log. The prequel, 'Shazam!' was both a critical and commercial hit thus fans have high expectations and the bar has been set high. The premise of the film revolves around Billy Batson and his foster siblings, who transform into superheroes by saying 'Shazam!,' and are forced to get back into action and fight the Daughters of Atlas. They must stop them from using a weapon that could destroy the world.

Regardless, several critics got the chance to see 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' early and they have shared their first reactions on social media. A critic described 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' is "endearing". He said, "SHAZAM FURY OF THE GODS is endearing, hilarious, entertaining and epic. Helen Mirren stands out as a great addition to Shazam's roster. Sandberg's film is just as engaging as the first, but here the stakes are upped. Huge twists galore, DC fans are going to love Shazam 2". 

Another added, "I saw #Shazam! Fury of the Gods! It’s a really good sequel. The theme of found family delivers great emotional beats. Sandberg sprinkles some horror elements while maintaining the childish joy & charm of the Shazamily. Nothing brand new but highly entertaining! Really enjoyed." 

A critic wrote, "DC is back! #ShazamFuryOfTheGods is much bigger & more explosive than #Shazam. Absolutely love the humor & the way it centers a chosen family. Also, no origin story means the action starts right away & doesn't stop. Gnarly monsters, fun surprises, ton of heart. I recommend." 

Another added, "I’ve seen #ShazamFuryOfTheGods and it’s all about FAMILY! This film amplifies what made #Shazam iconic and delivers a better story that embraces those FUN elements and knows its audience well! The humor is super creative and there are surprises DC fans will be SUPER happy about!"

A critic mentioned, "Oh damn! We can react to #ShazamFuryOfTheGods? It’s a total blast. @ponysmasher builds on EVERYTHING that worked in the original. There’s terrific Shazam action, the visual effects are excellent, and it’s fun! #Shazam is my favorite oddball corner of the DCU."

Lastly, a critic wrote, "#ShazamFuryOfTheGods is a MAGICAL and HILARIOUS family adventure. @PonySmasher SUPERCHARGES everything that made the first film special with the heart of the story always the SHAZAMILY. @RachelZegler and Jack Dylan Grazer steal every scene," while another added, "Shazam continues to lean into his silliness and immaturity in this sequel which tells us this franchise will remain to keep these films funny, light and slapstick-ish. The sequel comes with more action, compelling villains and a complicated antihero."

'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' is scheduled to be released on March 17, 2023, by Warner Bros Pictures in theaters near you.
