Shanice Young: Harlem woman, 31, shot dead trying to end fight after her baby shower
HARLEM, NEW YORK: A pregnant woman was shot dead in Harlem last Sunday, September 12, after she tried to intervene in a fight that broke out between her ex and beau in Harlem. The incident took place after her baby shower. The victim, 31-year-old Shanice Young, was pregnant with her second child. Mother of a six-year-old girl, she was also raising her younger sister after her mother succumbed to cancer last year.
Shanice was on her way back from her baby shower near her home when she found the two men fighting just after 1 am at West 128th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Manhattan. She had just left the shower at a catering hall near her home when the incident occurred. As she tried to make peace between her ex-boyfriend and the father of her unborn child, the eight-month pregnant woman was attacked and fatally shot in the head. “She stepped in between to break it up and got caught in the middle,” an NYPD spokesperson was quoted as telling New York Post.

Shanice's friend Candice said that the incident has shaken her. “They were unloading the stuff from the baby shower,” she said. “The gifts were lined up in the hallway, and she was going back outside when she got shot." “I’m shaken up by it,” Candice said of Young’s slaying. “Who the f–k shoots a pregnant woman? You’ve got to be out of your mind.”
Sources confirmed that the police have recovered three .40-caliber shell casings near the crime scene. Recalling the incident, Jose Morales, the super at Shanice's building, said, “I saw them trying to resuscitate her, pumping her chest. “There was a police officer who was trying so hard to save her. He was pumping and pumping and wasn’t going to stop. When it was over, the officer was in the lobby with me, and he was just like, ‘I tried. I tried’".
"She was going to have her baby in five days," her father, Thurman Young, 57, told the Daily News. "She said, 'This baby is coming in five days, Daddy. Get ready.' I said, 'I’ll be ready.' That’s the last thing she said to me."
Shanice was rushed to the hospital but she succumbed to her injuries. The police are yet to determine who pulled the trigger. No arrests have been made in the case yet. In another shocking story, a 32-year-old man called Gerard Pounder was shot dead around the same time on the boardwalk along Rockaway Beach in Queens after he got into a dispute with a man at a party. He died while whispering the name of the man who shot him. Pounder collapsed as he attempted to climb up the steps to boardwalk. He was taken to St. John’s Hospital but could not be saved. Pounder's girlfriend, who was interviewed by the police, said that he whispered the name of the man who killed him, right before he died.
