Why did Senator Mitt Romney slam Donald Trump as 'selfish'? Republican dubs Capitol violence 'an insurrection'
Republican Senator Mitt Romney slammed President Donald Trump on Wednesday after the latter's encouragement to his supporters for disrupting the peaceful power transition. Romney called it "an unprecedented attack against our democracy." "We gather today due to a selfish man's injured pride and the outrage of his supporters whom he has deliberately misinformed for the past two months and stirred to action this very morning," Romney wrote in remarks, adding that he would have made it to the Senate before Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. "What happened here today was an insurrection, incited by the President of the United States." This comment, reported by CNN, comes in the wake of the US Capitol incident that garnered headlines across the world. Romney's statements also saw Twitter agree with his words.
"Now @SenatorRomney, thank you for your repeated opposition to his most naked transgressions, but @realDonaldTrump has been misinforming everyone for the last four years. You said you owed voters the truth. We want ALL the truth," read one of the tweets.

"Mitt Romney wins a round of applause in the Senate with this line: “The best way we can show respect to voters who are upset is by telling the truth…. Joe Biden won the election. President Trump lost," read one of the comments.

Romney continued: "I ask my colleagues: Do we weigh our own political fortunes more heavily than we weigh the strength of our Republic, the strength of our democracy, and the cause of freedom? What is the weight of personal acclaim compared to the weight of conscience?" These statements also earned massive respect on social media. "Trump’s words today show that he’s completely incapable of putting the best interests of this nation and its people ahead of his own interests. Under the guise of calming things down, Trump is still trying to stir people up. All for his own ego," read one of the opinions.

CNN also added in its report that Romney, who lost the 2012 presidential election, urged fellow lawmakers to not have any more disruptions and "to move forward with completing the electoral count, to refrain from further objections, and to unanimously affirm the legitimacy of the presidential election."
