During an appearance on Fox News, Republican Senator John Neely Kennedy said, "We don't need more gun control, we need more idiot control." The comments soon went viral on social media, with many trolling the Louisiana Senator for his poor choice of words. Kennedy's statements came after President Joe Biden and the Democrats called for urgent gun control reforms, following the deadly shooting in Boulder, Colorado.

Gun control has once again become a critical flashpoint between Republicans, who are opposed to more control and Democrats, who are attempting to push legislation for greater background checks. Kennedy is just the latest Republican to take to conservative news media to argue against gun control reforms.

In the 20-second viral clip, Kennedy also compares gun control to driving, saying "You don't stop drunk drivers by getting rid of all sober drivers." He went on to say: "When a Muslim jihadist blows up a school full of school children, we are often told not to condemn all of the actions of those of the Muslim faith because of the actions of a few. And I agree with that. So why doesn't the same rule apply to the 100 million-plus gun owners in America who are exercising their constitutional right?"

The comments have outraged the internet, with many insulting Kennedy for his choice of words. Others have also asked for him to be removed, with a swell of opposition against him now clearly visible online. Here are just some of the more choice reactions to his comments.

'Bought and paid for by the NRA': Social media

Many users used Kennedy's comments as a good opportunity to target Republicans for their opposition to any Democratic legislation. One user tweeted, "Well Senator Kennedy we need both gun control and idiot control we are going to remove idiot Republicans in 2022 and ban assault weapons and pass increased background checks asap."

Other users just outright trolled him, such as this user who tweeted, "Senator Kennedy said 'we need more idiot control not gun control' speak for yourself moron. Let's start with him and Ted Cruz." Another posted, "There is irony in Senator Kennedy advocating for more idiot control on Fox News Channel."

Another user asked, "Wow Senator Kennedy thinks we don't need Gun Control what we need is Idiot Control. So, why do we have to take our shoes off to go through airport security, canโ€™t take liquids over 100ml in carry on? Why have any laws if all we need is idiot control?"

One more user targeted Kennedy's pro-abortion stance, tweeting, "Senator Kennedy, you rank up there as to why this country is like it is. The ignorance is astounding of the R politicians. You don't want gun control but you want to control my body and what I do with it?"

Of course, the former president Donald Trump also found a mention. "We exercised more idiot control Senator Kennedy. We voted Donald Trump out. Itโ€™s a start," one user tweeted.

Another user fired back at Kennedy, tweeting: "Senator Kennedy thinks we need idiot control, not gun control. Great. Require anyone with the potential to be an idiot to undergo mandatory firearms training, background checks, licensing, and registration when they want to buy a firearm."

"SENATOR KENNEDY IS BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY THE N R A," tweeted one user.

Not everyone attacked the Senator on social media, some also came to his defense. However, a majority seemed to want him gone. Kennedy was a registered Democrat but switched sides in 2017. He was also one of the eight Senators who voted to overturn the 2020 Presidential election results.
