'You could have died': Selena Gomez shares harrowing details about her lupus diagnosis
LOS ANGELES,CALIFORNIA: Selena Gomez shares more about her lupus diagnosis during her new episode of the hit Apple TV+ series 'Dear.' The pop star talked about the scary time when she felt perfectly fine and healthy but was diagnosed with this incurable disease.
Looking back to her 2014 diagnosis of lupus, the 'Kill em with Kindness' singer shared that she didn't feel any symptoms and was feeling perfectly fine, but inside, her body was fighting. She explained, "It was just my body fighting itself on the inside. That was the most surreal part because I never felt fatigued; I was young, and I felt completely fine. So hearing from a doctor, 'You could have had a stroke onstage, you could have died'—it was a lot. But I didn't allow it to sink in; I didn't want to process it", the singer added.

What is lupus?
Lupus is an incurable autoimmune condition that causes chronic inflammation in many parts of the body, like the skin, joints, heart, kidneys, lungs, and more. This leads to a spectrum of symptoms and possible complications, like kidney damage, heart problems, and mental health disorders like depression, among others, according to medical reports.
The pop star has always been vocal about her condition, she usually talks about how it affects her physically and emotionally, and how she is trying to cope with it and survive. In an interview with Elle in 2021, she said, "My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks—these were all things that honestly should have taken me down. You’re going to help people". She mentioned that this thought motivates her in the journey.
Lupus and weight fluctuation
Following her lupus diagnosis, the singer has been on different medications to help her fight the disease, which has caused her weight to fluctuate more, which has led to many people body-shaming her. Gomez also talked about how body shaming has affected her and how she handles the negativity.
