Hollywood on the frontline: Sean Penn puts himself in line of fire filming documentary in Ukraine

Sean Penn, who is famous for being at the forefront during natural or man-made disasters, is reportedly filming a documentary in Ukraine amid their conflict with Russia that led to a military attack on February 24. 2022. The actor and filmmaker, who previously visited Ukraine in November, attended a press conference where he listened to the government officials speaking about the crisis.
 
The Oscar-winning star is currently on the ground, as shared by the Facebook post of Office of the President of Ukraine. In the official statement, it was revealed that the 61-year-old actor visited the Ukraine capital of Kyiv on Thursday, February 24. According to reports, Penn’s documentary is being filmed in association with Vice Studios along with Vice World News and Endeavor Content. The official statement revealed that Sean Penn spoke to journalists, and the military and witnessed how they were defending the country.

Sean Penn, who has been at the forefront of many anti-war and humanitarian operations over the years, decided to risk his life as Russia performed a “special military operation” on Ukraine. In their statement, the Office of the President of Ukraine praised the actor for his courage saying, “The director specially came to Kiev to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia's invasion of our country” adding, “Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty.”
 
The statement further read, “This morning the director visited the Office of the President and visited the press briefing of the advisor of the head of the Office of the Head of State Mikhail Podolak and the Vice Prime Minister - the Minister of the Reintegration of temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine Irina Vere щуuk. He spoke to journalists, to our military, saw how we defend our country.” The statement continued, “Sean Penn demonstrates the courage that many others, especially western politicians lack. The more such people, true friends of Ukraine, who support the fight for freedom, the sooner it will be possible to stop the massive attack on Russia.”  It was also revealed that ‘The Mystic River’ star had also visited the Priazov and spoke to the Ukrainian military for the documentary he has been working on since last year. Sean Penn had also grabbed headlines when his organization Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) set up relief efforts during 2010 Haiti’s earthquake that was shown in the 2020 Discovery Plus documentary “Citizen Penn”.
 

‘Never liked Penn, but I'm glad he's doing this’

Social media users thronged to Twitter as soon as they got to know about Sean Penn being at the forefront of the war zone. “He’s gonna tie Putin to a chair for hours against his will as he beats and sexually abuses him. Oh, Sean Penn did that to his wife. I get my crimes against humanity confused”, said one user as another posted, “Sean Penn plays dress-up in Ukraine during invasion.” One user added, “Sean Penn (the actor) has entered the theater (of war). Are you people getting it? It's all manufactured.”
 
The next one added, “Sean Penn and Louis C.K. getting stuck in Kyiv is gonna be the next trapped ship in the Suez Canal, mark my words.” Another posted, “omg please protect sean penn.” Whereas, one shared, “I Hope Sean Penn’s Documentary has the same success as Capturing El Chapo… would love to see Putin in chains + Shackles.” One stated, “I am begging someone to stop Sean Penn…first El Chapo and now this??? White men need to do less.” And, the next one concluded, “I never liked Penn, but I'm glad he's doing this.”
