Sasha Velour’s 'Nightgowns': Release date, cast, format and everything else about the 'Drag Race' star's new show

Described as a part performance documentary and part portrait of the artist, the eight-episode docuseries sees Sasha work with various members of her 'weird and wonderful' ensemble to choreograph the unique and novel lip-sync performances of their wildest dreams.
PUBLISHED AUG 4, 2019

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 9 winner Sasha Velour has put on a theatrical drag showcase dedicated to celebrating exceptional drag performers of all backgrounds. Known as the "drag artist's drag show," ‘Nightgowns’ is an inclusive creative platform that provides drag queens, drag kings, AFAB, trans and gender-nonconforming drag performers, which is making its way to video streaming platform Quibi.

‘Nightgowns,’ which promises to give the audiences a fresh, personal, and truly queer night of theater started out as a monthly showcase in New York’s Brooklyn but it has since toured worldwide, and has reached theaters in cities such as London, and Los Angeles. Now, Sasha’s brand of extravagant, avant-garde performances can be enjoyed by people world over thanks to its addition to the streaming network.

Release Date

An official release date has not been assigned for ‘Nightgowns’ premiere, but it is expected to available for streaming when Quibi launches on April 2020.

Format

Described as a part performance documentary and part portrait of the artist, the eight-episode docuseries sees Sasha work with various members of her “weird and wonderful” ensemble to choreograph the unique and novel lip-sync performances of their wildest dreams.

Each installment of the ‘Nightgown’ will be focused on a particular performer and delve deep into their daily lives, backstories, and their process of preparing for the live performance, which is generally directed by the legendary music video director Sophie Muller. At the end of each episode, we get to see a 2-3 minute live performance that promises to be “iconic”.

Cast

It remains to be seen if the cast from the theater will also appear in the TV show as well, but it is pretty likely. We do know that Sasha will be among the core cast members, along with Untitled Queen, Vander Von Odd, Neon Calypso, Miss Malice, and Sasha Colby. It is also likely her Sasha's 'Drag Race' sisters may make appearances during the course of the series.

Creator:

Sasha, a gender-fluid drag queen, and visual artist, is best known for being the contestant and winner of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 9. She has a very distinct drag aesthetic, until recently choosing to dress effeminately while staying bald, and serving very conceptual, unique looks that can only be described as out of the box.

She has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, and Billboard, and she does not shy away from using her platform and her voice for her humanitarian and philanthropic efforts, as well as her activism.

Where to watch

When the show premieres in 2020, it will be available for streaming on Quibi.
