A Russian soldier was seen in a viral video holding two grenades in the air as he walked among Ukrainian civilians and demanded that they surrender.

The footage emerged as Russian troops captured the first major city in Ukraine. Kherson, a regional capital with 300,000 people on the Black Sea, is now under the control of Putin's forces. Meanwhile, they have also surrounded major cities including Chernihiv in the northwest, and Mariupol in the south, as well as Kyiv and Kharkiv, which are Ukraine's two largest cities. However, the two cities have remained under Ukrainian control at the time of publication.

The aforementioned video was filmed in Konotop. It showed a Russian soldier holding what appeared to be two grenades above his head as he walked through a crowd of Ukrainian citizens who shouted "shame." Some told the serviceman, "don't walk around showing your grenade off." Others appeared to jostle with the soldier despite the danger of the grenades exploding.

The Russian serviceman was in the city to negotiate a Ukrainian surrender with residents after their troops surrounded the city. He is said to have presented an ultimatum to Konotop Mayor Artem Semenikhin - surrender or fight. Semenikhin gave a rousing speech to residents following the departure of Russian forces from the city center. "They have given us an ultimatum - if we start resisting they will pull the city to pieces with artillery. You say yes then we will fight. Who's for fighting?" he asked the public. "I am for fighting! Listen, we should take the decision all together because the artillery is aimed at us already," he added. The crowd was subsequently heard telling Semenikhin, "Fight, of course."

Russian forces captured Kherson overnight. The city's mayor, Igor Kolykhaiev, revealed in an update around 1 am that "armed visitors" had stormed a council meeting and forced a strict curfew for citizens. However, it was unclear whether Ukrainian forces had fully conceded to the Russians. US officials have said that Russia will seek to encircle cities and cut off their supply and escape routes after having failed to swiftly take major cities and subdue Ukraine's military. Russians will subsequently attack the cities with a combined force of armor, ground troops, and engineers, intelligence suggests.

Kyiv and Kharkiv were subjected to heavy shelling overnight, with several missiles striking civilian areas. One of the targets was a train station in the Ukrainian capital being used to evacuate people from the city. The station was also serving as a shelter for those who couldn't or had chosen not to leave the city. That said, the cities of Chernihiv and Mariupol also remain under Ukrainian control despite being surrounded by Russian forces and sustaining heavy bombing campaigns. The mayor of Mariupol revealed Wednesday evening that Russian artillery had pulverized large parts of the city in what amounted to "genocide," the Daily Mail reported.
