GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger slams 'coup attempt' as pro-Trump mob storms, vandalizes US Capitol, clashes with cops
On Wednesday, January 6, the word “coup” echoed all over social media. As per the New York Times, thousands of protesters carrying Trump flags and shouting “You swore an oath” repeatedly clashed with police officers, tearing down a tarp and climbing over scaffolding and surged toward the door of the US Capitol. Soon, scores of these protesters in pro-Trump attire breached the Capitol building. Many of the maskless protesters also waved American flags as they swore at the officers and at times surged forward.
As per reports, protesters marched through Statuary Hall and broke windows. Live videos from the scene showed officers struggling to fight the protesters, spraying some type of substance at them. As reports kept arriving, one said those police officers even drew their guns inside the House chamber.
The Times reported at least two officers aiming their guns toward the doors of the chamber, which appeared to be barricaded with some kind of large desk. There appeared to be several holes in the door. CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta shared a photo of a “Trump rioter inside the Senate chamber.”

As per a report, TheDonald.win, an online forum for fans of President Trump, saw members plans to travel to DC for pro-Trump rallies. On the forum, posters have reportedly discussed ways they might “occupy” or “storm” the US Capitol to make citizens’ arrests of lawmakers for honoring state-certified election results. Democratic lawmakers said Capitol Police had instructed them to take cover on the floor and prepare to use gas masks after tear gas was dispersed in the rotunda of the Capitol.
As pro-Trump protesters stormed the Capitol building, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a citywide curfew starting at 6 pm.
Adam Daniel Kinzinger, an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 16th congressional district, a member of the Republican Party, called this a “coup attempt” on Twitter. Kinzinger later quoted Trump and tweeted, “You are not protecting the country. Where is the DC guard? You are done and your legacy will be a disaster.”

Many others have also referred to this as a coup. Bree Newsome Bass wrote on Twitter, “Amazing how the national guard gets deployed with the quickness in anticipation of protests when police kill someone but when Trump holds his fascist coup rally the national guard is nowhere in sight.”
Anthony Carboni wrote, “Shout out to giant media corporations and their vested interests in pushing a ‘both sides’ narrative that gave legitimacy to insane narratives for causing an attempted coup in the United States in the year of our lord 2021.” The Lincoln Project’s Fred Werllman said, “They have guns drawn to protect the Chamber. This is a coup.”

Actor Aimee Carrero wrote, “The president has incited violence in the form of a mob attempting a coup. This is domestic terrorism. Arrest the president.” Journalist and political commentator Ameshia Cross said, “What's happening in DC right now is a national embarrassment. Trump's mob of misled anarchists stormed the Capitol, they came here to obstruct. They came here to stall today's pertinent business. DC is now under curfew. And elected leaders are potentially in danger,” adding, “As some of these clowns have entered the building and none of them have been subject to metal detectors. These clowns are known to have weapons. My God, Republicans look what you allowed Trump to do. This isn't a protest. This is a coup.”
