NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Shockwaves jolted the nation on Tuesday, October 3, when Kevin McCarthy was ousted from his leadership position as GOP House Speaker.

The 58-year-old former House Speaker was ousted after eight conservative Republicans joined Democrats to approve a 'motion to vacate' introduced by GOP Rep Matt Gaetz.

The vote on Tuesday, with a tally of 216-210, marked the first time in US history that a speaker of the House has been removed from office, marking an ignominious end to a short and fraught tenure for the California Republican.

Following McCarthy’s ouster, Rep Patrick McHenry, R-NC, was named Speaker pro tempore to serve in office until a new Speaker was chosen.

There is no obvious successor to lead the House Republican majority now that McCarthy has opted not to run for the job again.

Celebrities react to Kevin McCarthy’s ouster

The news of McCarthy’s historic ouster garnered immense public attention, including several celebrities, who apparently had a lot of thoughts on the situation.

Meghan McCain

TV personality Meghan McCain appeared to be criticizing McCarthy’s ouster, with a social media post that read "I didn't realize we all collectively voted Matt Gatez President of Congress, senate, and all of American politics and we are all just at the mercy of his whims and tantrums.”

"The GOP's brand is officially just chaos and nothing else," she later wrote in another Tweet.

Yvette Nicole Brown

Actress Yvette Nicole Brown, known for her performance in ‘Drake & Josh’, took a dig a McCarthy saying he should remove the title from his name.

“The office of the Speaker of the House is VACANT. Hey, @SpeakerMcCarthy you need to remove that title from your name, playa! And gather those things out of that office. You’re done, REEK! 😜” she stated in a tweet.

Gabrielle Union

Actress Gabrielle Union had a simple yet loud response to McCarthy’s ouster. She re-tweeted one of McCarthy’s recent tweets with a GIF from her movie.

Rob Reiner

Renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner opted for a different approach where he took a dig at former president Donald Trump while responding to McCarthy’s ouster.

“McCarthy blamed Trump for Jan. 6. Then proceeded to kiss his ass. Once again, Rick Wilson’s declaration rings true: Everything Trump touches dies. If we don’t want America to die, every thinking feeling one of US must stop this sick Criminal from regaining the White House,” he wrote in a tweet.

Why did Kevin McCarthy refuse to run for Speaker of the House again?

Hours after his historic ouster, Kevin McCarthy held a press conference where he announced that he would not run for the GOP speaker again.

“I will not run for speaker again. I may have lost the vote today. But as I walk out of this chamber, I feel fortunate to have served the American people,” he stated.

He later took a dig at Democrats, particularly their longtime leader Nancy Pelosi, and his nemesis Gaetz, claiming that he was removed because of politics.

“I think today was a political decision by the Democrats. And I think, the things they have done in the past hurt the institution,” McCarthy said, according to Daily Mail.

He also asserted that “unfortunately, four percent of our conference can join all the Democrats and dictate who can be the Republican Speaker in this House. I don't think that rule is good for the institution, but apparently, I'm the only one."
