Back in March this year, when the Covid-19 outbreak was reaching its peak, contestants in Germany's 'Big Brother', locked in a gigantic house according to the reality show's protocol, had no clue what was going on in the world outside. Perhaps that was the inspiration behind Netflix's upcoming Brazilian horror 'Reality Z' where contestants similarly seek shelter in a TV studio when a zombie outbreak plagues the former capital city. How timely! Here's all you need to know about it.

Release date

'Reality Z' is dropping with all 10 episodes of its debut season on Wednesday, June 10.

Plot

Based on the British series 'Dead Set', the official synopsis of the upcoming zombie horror details: "As zombies attack Rio de Janeiro, reality TV show contestants hunker down in a TV studio where they must deal with more than flesh-eating hordes." IMDb further elaborates on the plot, adding that the fictional zombie apocalypse "imprisons participants and producers of a reality show called Olimpo, The House of the Gods, on its elimination night. The studio becomes a shelter for those who seek salvation in Rio de Janeiro where chaos and hopelessness begin to rule." The series was announced during Rio Creative Conference’s Primetime panel on April 24, 2019.

Creator

Produced in partnership with Conspiração Filmes, the series is directed by Cláudio Torres and Rodrigo Monte, based on a script from Torres, who is known for 'Redentor' (2004), 'The Man from the Future' aka 'O Homem do Futuro' (2011), and 'The Invisible Woman' or 'A Mulher Invisível' (2009).

Cast

The principal cast includes Guilherme Weber ('O Negócio', 'Real: O Plano por Trás da História') as the fictional reality series' producer. Jesus Luz ('Guerra dos Sexos', 'Aquele Beijo'), Ana Hartmann ('Onde Nascem os Fortes', 'Me Chama de Bruna'), Emilio de Mello ('Psi', 'O Outro Lado do Paraíso'), Carla Ribas ('Casa de Alice', 'Aquarius'), Luellem de Castro ('Malhação', 'Veronica'), Ravel Andrade ('Sessão de Terapia', 'Onde Nascem os Fortes'), and Sabrina Sato ('A Grande Vitória', 'O Concurso') also star.

Trailer

As far as typical Zombie horrors go, Reality Z's trailer does an excellent job at the blood and gore department. Mechanical zombies with electric blue eyes are enough to both amuse you and leave you unsettled. But it is perhaps all these elements of horror and pop culture coming together, sort of like your modern-day 'Scream' that makes it worth consideration. Check out the trailer here:
