According to the Daily Mail, in a press conference in October, Mayor Adams said that as he was focused on trying to make New York a livable city, the increase of rodents and fighting for their riddance was up there in his priorities along with crime and inequality.
The 'rat Czar' job description begins with the question, "Do you have what it takes to do the impossible?" It then explains the job requirements of "stamina and stagecraft" along with "swashbuckling attitude, crafty humor and general aura of badassery". PowerPoint knowledge is also necessary if you want to apply, the ad adds.
According to the posting, in addition to the leadership responsibilities, the candidate will be required to perform functions including strategy development, project management, public engagement, decisive leadership, research, writing and analysis, and also "Catch and Kill".
The values section of the posting states, "Rats will hate this job. But 8.8 million New Yorkers and your city government stand ready to work with you to reduce the rat population, increase cleanliness, and prevent pestilence."
According to CBS News, a city council member told the news outlet that since 2020, there has been a 71 percent increase in rodent sightings.
According to the job ad, the winning candidate will need to become a New York resident within 90 days of appointment.
