ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Democratic Sen Raphael Warnock has won a full term in the US Senate, defeating Republican Herschel Walker. Warnock's victory gives Democrats a 51-49 Senate majority. While Warnock won 1,753,023 votes, Walker lost with 1,697,746. This has been a close race and uncertainty loomed over the results till the last moment.

Walker has reportedly been a very controversial figure in politics. The entire campaign saw the football legend respond to allegations of domestic violence, and claims that he allegedly paid for ex-girlfriends' abortions although he supported a nationwide ban on the procedure. In the past, he has been blasted for gaffes and alleged false claims. He has also been allegedly accused of exaggerating his record in academics and business.

For Warnock, this is the second runoff win in less than just two years. He won another runoff contest in January last year. Warnock is the first BLACK US senator from Georgia, and this was the first time two African Americans ran as the major party's nominees for US Senate from Georgia.

Social media is calling the race "depressing", and some wondered how so many people could have supported someone as controversial as Walker. "The closeness of this race is the among the most depressing and ominous things I've seen in American politics in my lifetime," a user wrote on Twitter, explaining, "I say this because Walker was the worst candidate I’ve ever seen. That he could pull this close signals that Rep voters have extended the unconditional support that Trump claimed when he said he could shoot someone on 5th Ave & not lose a vote to all genl election Rep. candidates." Echoing the thoughts and considering how Walker could have won too, one user wrote, "That freaks me out."

"The fact that someone so completely unqualified is preferred by this many people is astonishing. It’s all about party over who would actually help people," one user wrote, while another said, "Walker is literally one of the worst senate candidates of all time and he made it to a runoff…" "Same. I’ll be overjoyed with even an eked out Warnock victory, but in a sane America it never would have been this close," one user said.
