Ramon Najera: San Antonio man, 81, who was mauled to death by pack of dogs was Air Force veteran
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS: The photo of the 81-year-old man, who was mauled to death by a pack of dogs that included pit bulls, has been released. Ramon Najera, a San Antonio native, died while trying to protect his wife, 74, from the dogs when they broke free from a yard on February 26, 2023.
However, Abilene Moreno, the wife of Christian Alexander who is the owner of the dogs, claimed that it was not his fault and he had taken utmost care while raising the powerful breed. She added that the dogs attacked people a couple of times before and were even confiscated by the authorities before their children begged to bring them back.

Abilene Moreno recalls the incident
"We were coming back and I saw the dogs behind the gate but they were full of blood," Moreno told local channel KENS5. "It's traumatizing to see my dogs that I have raised since they were puppies do that to somebody," she added. "From the bottom of our hearts, we're sorry but my husband is not responsible," she said while apologizing. She also added that they did everything possible to keep the dogs -- King, Snow, and Legend -- from escaping.
What are the charges Christian Alexander is facing?
Christian Alexander, 31, was charged with an attack by dangerous dog causing death and injury to an elderly person, both felonies. His bond was set at $125,000 and Monero said she was trying to raise the money to have him get released on bail.
The couple discovered that their dogs were out of their harnesses when they arrived home on Friday, February 24, and were informed by the emergency responders that their dogs had attacked four people and killed one. The dogs had been involved in two recent attacks, one involving King and two involving Snow. Monero. Despite the attacks, Moreno still claims that they were not raised to be aggressive. "We never hit them, neglect them, never abused them," she said. The dogs were temporarily confiscated by Animal Care Services following the attacks in January.
Monero claimed that neither she nor her husband wanted the dogs back but it was their children who did. "I was like, these dogs aren't for us anymore," she said.
A GoFundMe page has been created for Najera
The grandchildren of Najera and his wife Janie shared a tribute to their grandfather and created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral costs and medical bills for their grandmother's injuries. "Ramon was a San Antonio native, a US Air Force veteran, and an adventurous, outgoing, and loving family man," they wrote, adding, "He was recently put on dialysis but was determined to enjoy life to the fullest despite his health condition."
Ramon was described as a "strong man" by Carlos Gomez, Ramon's stepson and Janie's son on Facebook. "He was getting ready to start back up at his security job which is the reason they were stopping at a seamstress. My stepdad was having some work done on his uniform when they were viciously attacked by these dogs," he wrote.
