R Kelly ordered to pay victims over $300K in treatment costs for herpes and psychological damage
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: R Kelly will not only do time for his sex crimes in New York, but it also appears that he will be compelled to make large restitution payments to some of his victims, including paying for the treatment of their STDs and any subsequent psychological damage. At a restitution hearing on Wednesday, September 28, a judge weighed in on the amount that Kelly, who has already been found guilty and given a jail sentence, should pay.
The judge said that Kelly will be required to pay around $300K for herpes treatment as well as the ostensibly necessary therapy for a victim named "Jane." The same is true for another victim dubbed "Stephanie," but an exact figure hasn't been decided in her instance just yet. "Sonja," a third victim, did not get compensation. Therefore, it appears that Kelly will be liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more.

Kelly is currently serving 30 years in prison for federal sex offenses. He was recently found guilty in another federal case out of Chicago in which he was charged with the same offenses, and that case may also result in compensation. However, it is unclear whether Kelly would be able to actually pay his victims because he has recently claimed in court documents that he is short on funds.
Kelly's attorneys allegedly informed a Chicago judge in April 2020 that he owed the IRS approximately $2 million in unpaid taxes. Additionally, the singer was too poor, according to the artist's counsel, to even pay for court transcripts before his New York trial last year. Then, in order to start repaying his obligations, authorities took $27,824 from his jail commissary payments last month.
He received a 30-year prison term and a $140,000 fine in June, but the issue of restitution was not addressed. Then, last month, he was found guilty in Chicago on different counts; as a result, he now probably faces further jail time as well as fines and restitution obligations.
