WASHINGTON DC: Gregg Berhalter will no longer be a part of the United States national team after his controversial confession of physically abusing his wife. The star player was compelled to make a statement in front of the public for ‘kicking his wife’ in 1991, in an attempt to quash an alleged World Cup blackmail plot. Currently, the claim is being investigated by US Soccer. The 49-year-old former soccer player who coached the national squad during the recently concluded Qatar world cup was under immense pressure to admit his wrongdoings.

Meanwhile, the assistant coach, Anthony Hudson, will take up the role temporarily for the upcoming international friendlies against Serbia and Columbia this month. The matches are scheduled with the European squad on January 25 at Blanc of California Stadium, and the South American side on January 28, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. The stand-in coach will now work together with fellow World Cup assistant coach BJ Callaghan and under-20 Men’s Youth National Team head coach Mikey Varas, for the process of selecting and managing the roster for the coming matches.

He will be guiding his team after USMNT decided not to renew the contract after Berhlater’s legal commitment ended at midnight on January 1, this year. He represented the United States from 1994 to 2006. Berhalter in a statement released on his Twitter handle read, 'I am looking forward to continuing my conversations with US Soccer about the future, but now is the time for me to publicly share some personal information which a third party has used against my family and me.” It read. The long post continued, “During the World Cup, an individual contacted US Soccer, saying that they had information about me that would ‘take me down’ - an apparent effort to leverage something very personal from long ago to bring about the end of my relationship with US Soccer. This is a difficult step to take, but my wife, Rosalind, and I want to clearly and directly share the truth. This is a story that belongs to us, but hopefully, there are lessons from our relationship that can be valuable to others.”

The statement concluded with Berhalter saying, “We have raised four wonderful children, who are aware of what happened. We are very proud of our marriage, our relationship, the family we have built, and the people we have become. 'As a team, we emphasize accountability, honesty, and growth. Those aren't just principles we instill within the team; it is how I live my life. The foundation of any good team is using the past as an opportunity to learn and get better.”
