Shark or Dolphin? Pic captures rare moment a 'shark' leaps into air behind surfer on San Onofre beach
SAN ONOFRE BEACH, CALIFORNIA: During a surfing competition, a great white shark came out of the ocean, and a photographer was able to capture the incredible moment. Photographer Jordan Anast captured photographs of a shark throwing its body out of the water on Saturday, October 22, while it was lurking behind a surfer during the San Onofre Surf Club contest near San Diego, California. Anast told FoxWeather, “I thought it was a dolphin.” The photograph was reportedly captured with a Canon R5 mirrorless camera and a Canon RF 400m f/2.8L IS lens. “It’s a shot I’ll never get again. It just looks like ‘Sharknado,’ it doesn’t look real,” Anast told The Mercury News.
Anast reportedly took the incredible image of local surfboard maker Tyler Warren riding the waves while a long, slender shark sped up behind him. The shark can be seen forming a half-moon as it returns to the ocean in a series of pictures. Warren allegedly admitted to Anast that he was unaware of the shark's appearance. Anast wrote on his Instagram account, “WOW! What an exciting 24 hours it has been since the Great White Shark breach pictures were released, nonstop media coverage and my phone, email, texts, and website are still blowing up. I want to THANK EVERYONE for the kind comments and most of all years of support.”

“Over the decades I have captured some memorable moments for others, but this is one was for me. My passion has always been to stop time for 1 second, capture a memory for someone or something that will last forever, and show the world my pics through my lens. These shots will always be a part of San Onofre history and that is pretty cool. It is funny as many of you know San Onofre has limited parking so you have to wait in line once the lot is full. I never have waited before, but for some reason chose to, I guess this shot was why. Photography is an interesting thing, it is surreal to me as you never know what you will get. When I shoot I have a sense of peace as I have no worries and time seems to stand still,” he added.
Remarkably, it’s not the first time a great white shark has jumped out of the water. In a similar incident, on Saturday, October 22, according to a different image of the breaching shark shared by the San Onofre Surfing Club, a young great white was seen attempting to catch a pelican. The club wrote on its official Facebook page, “An uninvited guest popped up during the San Onofre Surfing Club’s annual surfing contest today. Surfers in the water said that it was going for the pelican in the upper right-hand corner of the photo. Scored a 10 by all judges.”
