NOTTING HILL, LONDON: PH (Police Horse) Sandown, a law enforcement horse, died on August 28 after collapsing while on duty at the Notting Hill Carnival. After serving seven years in the police department, the 14-year-old chestnut gelding, who measures 16 hands high, has been referred to as one of the Metropolitan Police's most seasoned horses. "PH Sandown was also an affectionate character who was full of personality. He loved his food and was always nuzzling in pockets looking for treats," the Met Police said in a report.

He was a trusted horse and helped in boosting young officers' confidence while they underwent their training. The horse was an expert at patrolling all sorts of happenings around London, according to the Met.

"He demonstrated his bravery and courageousness at numerous football fixtures," they added. As per the police, PH Sandown was also chosen to participate in both the Mounted Musical Ride and the Mounted Activity Ride at Olympia. "PH Sandown was a massive part of the Mounted Branch family and was loved dearly. He will be sorely missed by all," said the Met. They further stated that an autopsy is being conducted to find out the reason for his death.

What is the Notting Hill Carnival?

Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's biggest public carnival, with approximately two million individuals scheduled to participate. It usually takes place on the August bank holiday Monday and the preceding Sunday. When it debuted in 1966, around 1,000 people participated in the carnival. The event quickly gained notoriety for its appreciation of Afro-Caribbean customs.

On August 28, Notting Hill Carnival made its three-year comeback to West London's streets after being compelled to take a break due to Covid. Performers in vibrant, feathery attire set out to take part in the event. This year's festival has 13 steel musicians, 72 mast bands, 6 Brazilian bands, 36 audio sets, and 300 booths.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the last festival in 2019 cost them $10.7 million to patrol. However, the event generates approximately $140 million and draws a large number of visitors to London.
