The controversies that have embroiled Matt Gaetz are not fading away soon, as after being accused of sex trafficking, a new report has claimed that he and his friend Joel Greenberg paid women for sex via apps and in cash.

The new revelation began a series of jokes on Twitter, with people calling the 38-year-old “dumb” and “stupid”. Gaetz is currently under federal investigation for sexual misconduct after it was alleged that he was sexually involved with an underage girl and paid for her travels with him.

The latest report by The New York Times, which also broke the news about the Trump ally’s possible sexual misconduct, has been written by Katie Benner and Michael S Schmidt. The writers have named several sources and also claimed to have reviewed receipts from Cash App and Apple Pay showing transactions done by Gaetz and Greenberg to one of the women and payment from Greenberg to another woman.

“Investigators believe Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector in Seminole County, Fla., who was indicted last year on a federal sex trafficking charge and other crimes, initially met the women through websites that connect people who go on dates in exchange for gifts, fine dining, travel and allowances, according to three people with knowledge of the encounters. Mr. Greenberg introduced the women to Mr. Gaetz, who also had sex with them, the people said,” the report stated.

Soon after the NYT report went public, a number of people took to Twitter to mock the Florida representative. One of the users said, “Matt Gaetz really thought he wouldn't be found out as long as he paid prostitutes via Cash App and Apple Pay?? Matt Gaetz is going to prison.” Another said, “Tonight, SOMEBODY is asking SIRI if they can use Apple Pay for their legal fees.”

“We actually have a government with elected officials dumb enough to pay for sex with Apple Pay,” a person remarked while a second one wrote, “People are flabbergasted by Matt Gaetz’ obvious stupidity in using cashapp & Apple Pay & flashing nude pix of women/girls on the WH floor. But this is all too familiar, careless behavior of rich white men who are used to breaking rules, hurting people and criming with impunity.”

“These immoral idiots thought Trump would be around to protect them.  The American voters had different plans,” a comment on Twitter read. “Note to self: Next time I want to pay for prostitutes Don't use Cash Apps or Apple pay. They are traceable! #MattGaetzIsAPervert #MattGaetzIsInTrouble,” another tweet added.

Meanwhile, on April 1, Gaetz’s office said in a statement, “Matt Gaetz has never paid for sex. Matt Gaetz refutes all the disgusting allegations completely. Matt Gaetz has never ever been on any such websites whatsoever. Matt Gaetz cherishes the relationships in his past and looks forward to marrying the love of his life.”

Gaetz also took to Twitter earlier to prove his innocence as he wrote, “Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name. We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter......and my father has even been wearing a wire at the FBI’s direction to catch these criminals. The planted leak to the FBI tonight was intended to thwart that investigation. No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets......of the ongoing extortion investigation. I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations.”
