Pennsylvania school bans CNN broadcast as parents feel it 'feeds kids wrong notion'
A Pennsylvania school board decided this week to eliminate streaming of a CNN-affiliated program from middle school classes which was a mandatory click. They’ve now set a new policy where instructors will decide and show patriotic movies with moderation. According to Megan Zobb, a seventh-grade global studies teacher, it seems that the school homeroom is already used to display movies that promote patriotism. But sadly, this 10-minute CNN broadcast started to overpower, which has been criticized and banned.
CNN 10, a condensed version of daily news for students in grades 6 through 12, was initially added to the district's mandated viewing material in 2019. Carl Azuz served as the main anchor CNN 10 which was pretty popular. But after various critics, the review of the show started. On February 14, 2022, the meeting took place to ban the CNN broadcast. In that meeting, Kristen Ummer, eighth-grade social studies teacher said, “It was said to promote civic management. But to this statement, many opposed. One mother of a student said that this program is, “feeding [her son] every day that CNN is a label you can trust.” Another parent added by saying, "I feel questioning the bias of news source(s) is another way of seeing what is being taught to our children, and it should be reviewed."

After all the scrutiny, they voted to ban CNN 10 at the school. In this meeting, five members namely Christine Baverso, Robert Wayman, Alexander Detschelt, Shawna Ilagan, and Raymond Kocak voted to remove CNN 10, while four others, that is, Patrick Lynn, Darlene Ciocca, William Essay, and Joanna Jordan voted against this. Thus, the broadcast was removed. As this news reached Twitter, many users started to register their opinions there. A Twitter user stated, “Why was this in place to begin with? When did middle school classrooms start watching the news? Other than the OJ trial, I don’t recall our teachers ever turning a TV on and just watching the news.” Another user said, “This is why I scream from the top of my lungs all the time, "Get involved at local and state levels ..THAT is where change begins!" I am at every school board meeting and make my voice heard. We got mask mandates stopped MONTHS ago for our district. Get involved people!!”This is why I scream from the top of my lungs all the time, "Get involved at local and state levels ..THAT is where change begins!"
