Details of the attack
The incident reportedly happened at the corner of a street just across from Crotona Park School. At the corner of Southern Boulevard and East 174th Street, the attackers ganged up on the teen around 3pm. This is also the time when school is usually dismissed and the 14-year-old was making his way back home. As seen in the video, two strangers approached the boy and seemed to question him. They reportedly asked him where he was from. This was from the initial few seconds of the video where the teen is surrounded by only two strangers.
As the boy keeps walking, the first two suspects started attacking him. They kicked and punched the boy and within seconds more strangers joined in the attack. The first suspect, dressed in a peach vest, was seen kicking the teen in his midsection. After this kick, the boy lost his balance and fell on the side of the street.

The boy is seen trying to make a move towards a corner but one of the attackers shoved him into one of the parked vehicles close to the traffic signal pole. The attacker then also thrusted his head into the signal pole before ramming it into the pavement. In the entire duration of 32 seconds where the boy is seen getting beaten up by numerous persons, two vehicles were seen slightly lowering their speed and getting a full view of this attack. They did nothing and drove away.
The 14-year old victim is then seen curling up in a ball at the side of the footpath with one of his sneakers thrown several feet away from where he lay. Before leaving him in this condition, one of the attackers is seen taking away the teenager's phone.
Police reported that the young victim was admitted to a local hospital close to where this incident took place. After being treated for a broken nose, he was released. As NYPD posted this surveillance video on Twitter, several Twitter users said that they weren't too happy with the safety measures.
