TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA: In a world where education is held in high regard when it comes to shaping a person's career, colleges and universities across America are being slammed for 'junk' curriculum. What does Ron De Santis' have to say about 'zombie studies'?

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has positioned himself for a 2024 presidency run, has expressed his concerns about the recent alarming developments in education programs. During a bill-signing speech on higher education reform the Gov. Ron DeSantis furiously criticised the so-called "zombie studies" after learning about the numerous number of colleges across America offering the zombie-themed courses.

"I’m a big believer in higher education but I’m not a believer in plunging people $150,000 into debt with a degree in ‘zombie studies,’" DeSantis said in June 2022, according to WUSF. "That is not a pathway to success."

Colleges in the US offering zombie studies

Colleges such as East Tennessee State University, Saint Xavier, George Mason University, and more are reportedly offering or have offered zombie related studies, according to a report from the College Fix. East Tennessee State University Board of Trustees have been known to reportedly approve a course titled "Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse: An Interprofessional Approach" in the fall of 2022. The study related to zombie apocalypse appears to fall under the section of the East Tennessee State University's rehabilitative health sciences program.

The course will provide "an interdisciplinary approach to a course-specific theme on the zombie apocalypse while allowing the exploration of personal development, intellectual growth, and what it means to be a college student in a [Clinical & Rehabilitative Health Sciences] major," according to a description online. In Spring 2021, The University of Southern California offered a course named, "Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse."

"The Zombie Apocalypse has arrived. Seventeen of you are trapped on the University Park campus of the University of Southern California, in the Hoose Library of Philosophy. You must work out what you are going to do to survive. The philosophical wisdom of the ages might help. Or it might not. You will have to learn more about it, in order to decide," a description for the course states. The Saint Xavier University opted for a literal fictional approach by offering "Biology of Zombies" and "The Walking Dead? An Introduction to Popular Culture" as an option to the freshman students in 2021.

Netizens had a field day after learning about the recent zombie courses in universities. One user wrote on Twitter, "Oh parents paying for this crap." Another added, "Colleges are catering to any possible student interest..shame on them But it's about the money and football right." A third chimed, "This is why student loans can't be repaid." A fourth claimed, "Your tax dollars well spent eh ?" "As long as they don’t say 'gay'. Right?" another tweet read. Another questioned, "The point of this study is........?"

"OK! You may want to track anyone who signed up for the class," a user mocked. A person tweeted with a gif saying, "Mom and dad I’m taking zombie studies! -American students in 2023" "Are you serious is this a joke this has to be fake news you mean we are going to start courses on zombie apocalypse but we can't teach black history in college," another user remarked.
