Suhith Mahendra: Oxford Brookes student, 23, died after accidentally impaling himself on spiked railings
OXFORD, ENGLAND: A 23-year-old Oxford Brookes University student, Suhith Mahendra, died after accidentally impaling on metal spiked railings. He was trying to climb over a fence when he slipped and fell onto the fence which led to two fatal abdomen punctures.
According to Oxford Mail, the incident, that took place on May 19 around 5.30 am, occurred when Mahendra was returning from Cowley Road and he tried taking the shortcut over the fence from Cuckoo Lane, off Marston Road, to the Clive Booth halls of residence. Following this, a security guard, Asim Mohammed, heard Mahendra’s friend Theo Pemberton screaming, “My friend has died, please don’t die.” Narrating the accident details, Pemberton told, as per DailyMail, "There is a low metal fence with metal spikes on top. We had taken this shortcut hundreds of times before. I jumped over first, I had longer legs than Suhith and I used my phone to shine a light. He used his right leg and had his left leg on a metal post. It was then that his foot slipped, it had been raining lots that evening. I jumped back over and I used all my strength to pull him off. He then fell backwards on to another fence."

Pemberton, who is a former lifeguard and trained first-aider, added, "He was wearing a white top and I could see wounds under his belly button. I could see something coming out of his wounds. I used my hoodie and hat to put beneath him. He very quickly went downhill and was in pain but then he stopped. I then called for an ambulance." Pemberton's phone, who called Mahendra "a kind, sweet, and generous" person and "a brilliant friend," soon ran out of power, and he began performing CPR. Soon, security guards and a warden, Fraser Bonar, also arrived at the scene. When paramedics arrived they took over chest compressions and removed Mahendra, who was doing a master's in marketing, from the railings, as per Oxford Mail.
As told to DailyMail, detective constable Clare Scanlon called it "tragic accident." He said, "There is nothing that had come to light during the investigation that has raised concerns of suspicious third-party involvement. It appears this was a tragic accident and he had landed on the metal spikes causing him to die from his injuries."
