'Outer Banks' actor Adina Porter says Susan Peterkin is 'the adult in the room' just like Indra in 'The 100'
When fans of The CW hit show 'The 100' set out to binge-watch 'Outer Banks' when it releases on April 15 on Netflix, they are sure to note a familiar face. Adina Porter, who is best known for her roles in 'The 100' and 'American Horror Story', plays the recurring role of Sheriff Susan Peterkin in 'Outer Banks'.
Eager fans may also notice that Sheriff Peterkin is familiar in more ways than one, and they won't be alone. MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) caught up with Adina Porter to talk about 'The 100' final season and the 'Outer Banks' first season.
'Outer Banks' is a coming-of-age story of a handful of kids on the islands of Outer Banks situated in North Carolina. The kids in question are mainly the Pogues, three of whom are from the working-class community: John B, JJ and Pope. Their fourth friend, Kiara, is a hippy socialist.
When John B realizes that the treasure his father was looking for could be real, he ropes in his friend to go looking for it. Unfortunately, in the process, the Pogues end up upsetting the wrong people. For the most part, the Pogues are alone and do not have any parental support. Even if they do, we barely see their parents.
And so, it is up to Sheriff Peterkin to keep an eye on and look out for the Pogues, especially John B, who is also trying to avoid going into the foster system. While Sheriff Peterkin might seem to be one thing initially, Porter tells us that she turns out to be different. Porter jokes that Sheriff Peterkin is "Indra, but on the sea." She says, "She's the adult in the room and she's law enforcement."
In 'The 100', Indra started out as the chief of Tondc and was against the Sky People. But eventually, as the seasons went, Indra became one of the Sky People's strongest allies, and with most of them being minors -- at least in the first few seasons -- she was often "the adult in the room." Much like how Sheriff Peterkin looks out for John B, Indra looked out for Octavia Blake.
Porter says she had a blast working on 'Outer Banks', which was shot in South Carolina. She seems to be something of a history buff as she tells us that 40% of African-Americans can trace their ancestors to the state because of the slave trade. Porter made full use of her time in South Carolina and went on guided tours to take in as much information and knowledge as possible.
She also tells us that the Netflix show was a "labor of love" by the brothers, Josh and Jonas Pate, who wanted to share a part of their childhood which involved the boats, rivers and the sea with the rest of the world, adding that they were "very kind people."
Porter is also excited for the younger cast for whom 'Outer Banks' will be their big shot. She adds that the show has many "twists and turns," and that it will be a "great show to binge-watch while we wait for our race to heal."
All episodes of Season 1 of 'Outer Banks' will be released on Netflix on April 15 at 12 am PT.
