'One Chicago' Crossover 2019: 'Chicago Med' might make Crockett Marcel an obstacle to Ethan Choi's and April Sexton's relationship

In the previous two episodes of 'Chicago Med', Dr. Marcel and April spent significant time working together. Could this be the next roadblock in her relationship with Ethan?

We have had a few hours to digest the massive three-hour 'One Chicago' crossover event this week -- what better time to discuss what's next for our favorite characters? Of the three shows, 'Chicago Med' does the most to make sure its characters do not get a happy ending -- just think of Natalie and Will or Connor and Ava. It seems like the writers haven't had enough because we think they are going to take away Dr. Ethan Choi and nurse April Sexton's happily ever after -- at least, temporarily -- and this comes because of the new character, Dr. Crockett Marcel's presence.

In the second episode of the current season of 'Chicago Med', we see April working with Marcel. Marcel's methods don't sit well with her, but it seems like by the end of the episode, she sees a side of him that he is desperately trying to hide -- his softer one. A similar thing happens in the crossover. We did not see much of Ethan, but April and Marcel worked non-stop to treat all the patients of the flesh-eating bacteria. The viewers and April could see Marcel getting exhausted -- both physically and emotionally. This time, April lets him know that it's okay to be vulnerable now and then.

We have seen April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) work closely with Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) twice now in two episodes of 'Chicago Med' (NBC).

One episode meant we did not think too much of April and Marcel's scenes, but two episodes in a row make us think that something is up. Ethan and April are at a really good place in their relationship now after a difficult year, last season. After a pregnancy scare at the end of the last season -- carried over to the beginning of Season 5 -- the pair are clearly happy together, so much so that Ethan even broaches the subject of them potentially having kids sometime in their future. So what could go wrong?

Marcel is what could go wrong. We haven't seen any other character have a meaningful interaction with him, not the way that April has. After the crossover, we think that Marcel could be given the task of heading up the Hybrid Operating Room which was run by Dr. Connor Rhodes last year, and April could be the nurse that is assigned with him now that Maggie is taking treatment for her cancer.

It's only been four episodes but we think it would be worthwhile to keep our eyes on Ethan, April, and Marcel. As much as we are enjoying the new character, it seems repetitive to bring him in between what is probably the only stable relationship in the show and perhaps the whole franchise (not counting Mouch from 'Chicago Fire' and Platt from 'Chicago P.D.' of course). Let Ethan and April be, and perhaps give us some new kind of drama that would endear Marcel to the viewers.

'Chicago Med' airs on NBC on Wednesday nights.
