NYPD cops who took turns to have sex with handcuffed 18-year-old suspect in back of police van spared jail
Two NYPD police officers who took turns to have sex with an 18-year-old suspect who was handcuffed in the back of their car have avoided being jailed.
In a shocking judgment, New York Police Department Detectives Eddie Martins, 39, and Richard Hall, 34, managed to avoid prison and will spend five years on probation.
The two were originally charged with raping the girl and then releasing her without arrest. The victim is by her alias Anna Chambers and has waived her anonymity to speak out in the case.
After the appalling September 2017 incident, prosecutors had requested that the two receive at least three years prison sentence, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement. However, they could not get a plea deal after the cops admitted charges of bribery and misconduct on Thursday, August 29.
State Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun indicated each defendant will be sentenced in October to five years probation, Koco News reported.
After the hearing, Chambers was shell-shocked and blasted the justice department in a tweet. "F**k the justice system lmfaooo shits a joke," she wrote.
Her attorney, Michael David, reprimanded the sentencing saying: "We’re outraged. It’s complete injustice what happened today. You can’t consent when you’re five foot three, 100 pounds, and they’re both over six feet and very muscular. They had her in handcuffs. These cops got a free pass," Metro reported.
Prosecutor Gonzalez said in a statement: "These defendants engaged in a shocking abuse of power, which they finally acknowledge. While I would have preferred to see them serve prison time, they are no longer members of our police department and with today’s plea are convicted felons."
The corrupt officials took Chambers in custody while on an undercover ‘buy and bust’ drugs raid in Coney Island almost two years ago. The teenager was in a car with two men and was arrested after she confessed to having weed and anti-seizure medicine Klonopin without a prescription. Chambers was then taken to the officers’ unmarked Dodge Caravan, where the two cops took turns to have sex with her before releasing her.
Justice Chun accepted that there was "very compelling scientific evidence" against the pair but also added that "the credibility of the victim, or the complainant, in this case, was seriously, seriously questionable, at best."
The two cops resigned in November 2017 and were arraigned the same month.
