Rays vs Yankees: Gerrit Cole's dismal outing has New York fans slamming the pitcher as 'trash and overpaid'
New York Yankees were not happy. At the time of writing, their million-dollar pitcher Gerrit Cole had given away 12 homers against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. The Rays were up 5-0 in the top 6th and Twitter was flooded with Cole getting roasted by fans as they expressed their sheer displeasure. There was some support coming in for the pitcher, but the complaints far outweighed the sympathy and the support.
"There's nothing wrong with saying that Gerrit Cole has been disappointing. Too many homers allowed. He's better than that," wrote one of the fans.

And then came some number crunching that most definitely stung the Yankees fan. "Most HR allowed by a Yankee SP in team's first 33 games: Scott Sanderson 12 (1992) Dennis Rasmussen 12 (1987) Gerrit Cole 12 (2020) Tim Leary 11 (1990) Orlando Hernandez 11 (2000)."

"Stop pitching Gerrit Cole against the Rays they are not afraid of him anymore," a comment read.

"There is no excuses for Cole anymore. Most HR given in the league and 4ERA. 9yr/324 million contract. Hope he turns it around but it’s embarrassing rn. You expect to get a top 2 SP in the league with that contract and you can easily argue he’s not even top 5 as of rn(this season)," a fan tweet read.

"No he will not figure it out lol. He trash and overpaid," a fan tweeted.
Cole's numbers said it all as he ended with the final line of the night: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 SO, 2 HR before being replaced by Nick Nelson. Some fans refused to believe the game was over. "The fans are acting like it's the end of the world, Gerrit Cole has only given up four runs, we still have four at-bats this game is far from over, and yes they are being no-hit," a fan opined.

"Gerrit Cole through 8 starts last year wasn’t any better, and we all remember how he looked down the stretch into the playoffs. I have no doubt he’ll turn it on," said one of the fans who felt this was a one-off day for Cole.
