Courtney Hughes and Kyron Peters: Family mourns death of 2 teens shot dead at New Orleans house party
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA: Courtney Hughes and Kyron Peters, both 19 years old teens died in a fatal shooting during a house party. The incident took place in the early morning hours after Christmas in New Orleans and the victims were pronounced dead by EMS on arrival at 12.30 am. On December 26, as per a press release from the New Orleans Police Department, it is alleged that someone opened fire in the Lower Ninth Ward.
“According to investigators, Fifth District officers responded to a call of a shooting, and upon their arrival, officers located four victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to their bodies. Emergency Medical Technicians pronounced the 19-year-old male and 19-year-old female dead on the scene. Moreover, two 18-year-old males were transported to a local hospital via Emergency Medical Services,” as per the official statement. It adds, “The 17-year-old female and 18-year-old female were transported to a local hospital via private conveyance.” The deceased, Hughes, was a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was visiting family for the holidays, as per the Facebook post from the university.

"Southern University extends condolences to the family and loved ones of Courtney Hughes, a freshman from New Orleans who was majoring in nursing," it read. "She was fatally shot on Monday morning while visiting home during this holiday season. Our thoughts are also with others affected by this tragic incident." Peters’ heartbroken mother, Earsel Peters, told WDSU, "Never thought he would be dead, never dreamed in a million years. They just don't know what they did I'm trying to be strong for my children but it's hard. He walked out the door, and he said, 'Ma, I love you.' I said, 'I love you too, be safe, son." As per his profile on Hudl, he played football and basketball at Brooker T Washington High School in New Orleans and was expected to graduate in 2023.
It was a short-term rental property, where the shooting took place, triggering the cease of all activity and the owner being served notice as per WDSU. "The above-listed property is out of compliance with the city code and the comprehensive zoning ordinance governing short-term rentals, specifically short-term rental general standards and prohibited acts quality of life issues, it read."
The authorities are yet to make any arrests in the deadly shooting case and have appealed to anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
