Spoilers for 'New Amsterdam' Season 4 Episode 1 'More Joy'

'New Amsterdam' doesn't skip a beat and picks up right where it left off. 'Sharpwin' fans will be absolutely delighted and if you thought Donna and Harvey kissing in 'Suits' was a memorable one, this medical drama maybe just gives an extended look at their steamy lovemaking to set the tone for what promises to be a neat season. The parallel storylines, all connected by one main plot do well in the new season opener and that makes 'More Joy' a welcome watch.

It's a new dynamic between Medical Director Max Goodwin and the head of the oncology department, Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman). After what has been three seasons of teasing a potential relationship between the two, the series starts off by showing them as an uncertain couple trying to navigate the new boat they're in. It's stormy waters no doubt, but Goodwin does enough convincing to make Sharpe see that there is hope in this relationship.

A still from 'New Amsterdam' (NBC)

Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) in typical Bloom fashion sizes up the new Emergency Department residents, with girlfriend Leyla Shinwari (Shiva Kalaiselvan) being part of the team. It becomes a tad difficult for the latter when Bloom showers praise on her and outrightly tells the new team about their relationship. This puts a dent as Shinwari later confronts Bloom about it. Lesson learned, Bloom switches to her boss mode in the end signaling she respects Shinwari's feelings.

Dr Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) is caught in a dilemma when he realizes he has to go back to an old patient, whom he later had to let go. The hospital has an arsonist setting fire to certain wings and causing massive chaos, and he meets with Mary, his former patient who explains the psyche of the man who set fire to the building.

While that may have been the connecting factor, the individual storylines make sure 'New Amsterdam's Season 4 is off to a decent start. Dr Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) finds himself in an awkward position with Dr Baptiste and his wife, Dr Lyn Malvo (Frances Turner). He saves her from the fire, and that latest save might just change how their relationship pans out. 'More Joy' delivers what it promised. What it does is focus on characters who deserved all the attention and that makes the new season worth tuning in.

'New Amsterdam' airs Tuesdays 10 pm ET/PT on NBC.
