New Amsterdam Season 2: Helen and Max have a complicated relationship, but is there a will-they-won't-they brewing?

However the story may pan out, we are excited to see how Max and Helen's relationship changes when 'New Amsterdam' returns with Season 2 on September 24.

Every medical drama needs a complicated personal relationship to keep the audience hooked to the storyline, and that is exactly what Max (Ryan Eggold) and Helen (Freema Agyeman) bring to the table on NBC's 'New Amsterdam.' And, this is exactly why we believe that Helen is excused from a sudden death despite that shocking Season 1 finale.

We know for a fact that three people's lives are still in danger - Georgia (Lisa O'Hare), Lauren (Janet Montgomery), and Helen - and that one of them will not survive the crash. But, despite the promos that are desperately trying to convince us that Helen is not out of the woodworks, it is quite impossible to imagine the show without her.

Since the beginning of 'New Amsterdam,' we have seen the palpable chemistry between the two doctors. In fact, even Helen's boyfriend Akash (Sendhil Ramamurthy) once pointed out how complicated it appears, and how easy it is for him to know when Max is on the phone with her. Then, there was that woman who claimed to be psychic and warned Helen that despite her feelings for Max, it was never going to work out between the two of them.

Helen realized early on that there were certain boundaries that she was crossing with Max and decided to stop being his oncologist - choosing to have only two labels that connected them - colleague and friend. One of the biggest reasons that stopped her from pursuing a relationship with him is obviously the fact that he is married. In Max's case, he is so in love with his wife that he cannot even imagine getting intimate with another woman. However, with the seemingly confirmed death of Georgia, it is almost certain that a will they-won't they dynamic is about to set off between them. We are not saying that it will happen right away. It may not even happen in Season 2, considering he has an infant to look after as a single parent, but it is certainly a potential storyline for a not-too-distant future.

It may begin with Helen crossing the fine line between being a good friend who is there for Max after his wife dies, to being so invested in his life that she forgot when she fell in love with him. However the story may pan out, we are excited to see how Max and Helen's relationship changes when 'New Amsterdam' returns with Season 2 on Tuesday, September 24.
