In 2001, Ismael Alvarez, the mayor of Spanish city Ponferrada, became the first Spanish politician to be convicted of sexual harassment. But for Nevenka Fernandez, a young Spanish economist who spoke out long before social media was a platform and #MeToo was a thing, the ordeal was only just beginning.

When she filed the complaint on the sexual harassment, Fernandez was just 26 years old. She ended up winning the court battle -- he was convicted and sentenced to pay a nine-month fine as well as compensation of 12,000 euros, which was later lowered to 2,160 euros. In the aftermath of the conviction, Fernandez continued to face danger -- the day of the conviction, four thousand residents protested in support of Alvarez, who returned to politics in 2011.

Alvarez moved to Madrid to live with her boyfriend's parents, but even there she began receiving threats -- one anonymous caller told her, "We are going to shoot you but we are not going to kill you, so when you go out, try to look well to both sides." She then moved to London.

Now, a new miniseries from Netflix looks at the case and Fernandez as she had to rebuild her life. Featuring testimony from Fernandez as well as other key people in the case, 'Nevenka: Breaking the Silence' will arrive on Netflix in March.

Release date

The three-part docuseries, 'Nevenka: Breaking the Silence' will be available to stream on Netflix on Friday, March 5, at 12 am PST.
