'Looking nothing like me'
The user wrote, "I (F27) am white and my husband (M30) is Mexican. We have a 10-month-old who looks exactly like my husband did when he was a baby, but with paler skin. He has the same dark brown curly hair and dark brown eyes," adding, "My mom loves my husband and my son and she's always been supportive of our relationship. But recently she's been making comments about my son looking nothing like me. She says things like 'It’s too bad he doesn’t look more like you' and 'You can’t even tell that he’s your son'."
The user said that her mother even criticised the child's name. She wrote, "We gave our son a Hispanic name, Mateo, but sometimes we call him Matty. So my mom always says 'You should've just named him Matthew' which is just the white version of his name. I'd usually just ignore it until she said 'He already looks Mexican and has a Mexican last name. The least you could've done is given him a more white name.' And so I finally snapped and called her racist."
The user concluded her post with, "She flipped out and got super defensive. She said she just wanted him to look more like me because I'm beautiful. I told her that my son is perfect the way he is. I understand her wanting my son to look like me, but she specifically said she had a problem with him looking Mexican and having a Mexican name, so I know it's more than that. She just wants him to look white."
'Your mom is racist'
Netizens rallied around the user, saying that her mother was racist. A person commented, "NTA. Your mom is racist, and you're right: your son *is* perfect the way he is. Your mother is risking her relationship with her grandson by not appreciating him, and that's nobody's fault but hers." Another user wrote, "I agree, the Mom is racist. I have a white Dad and a Latina Mom and look absolutely nothing like my dad. No one has ever said shit about it especially my white grandmother," adding, "Reminds me of a s****y comment my MIL made once about white people are becoming the minority in the US. Thankfully she's far away from me but some people are just terrible." A third user wrote, "NTA She's being racist and if she doesn't like being called out on it then tough. She has some reflection to do."
