From the moment Clare (Asher Keddie), the news General Manager of Barton Detention Center lands on the premises, unrest follows her every move. With a boss breathing down her neck and a smug subordinate running the security system, Clare's plate is full with not just impatient illegal migrants awaiting their protection visas in Australia. To add to that, there's the rampant issue of journalistic coverage plaguing her steps with helicopters and reporters ready to clamp down on Barton's mismanagement. Things take a spike when one of the guards beats up a detainee at the only camera-less section of the premises. Yet when a photo of the injured detainee releases to the press, it becomes evident that the protesters outside are gaining leverage from inside. The only question remaining to be answered is: who is the leak?

Frustrated detainees have been held in the miserable living conditions of Barton which acts as a reflection of Australia's problematic immigration policies and detention facilities. Some of them are rebelling by climbing the roof and holding up "Save Us!" signs every time a press helicopter approaches. Others protest against the miserable food, while some just want to be reunited with their family. In all of this, protesters outside Barton are making things difficult as well, but the authorities' biggest worry is the leaked photograph of the detainee who was wrong used with aggravated force when all he did was ask for a basic supply.

When scanned thoroughly, the guards are able to find a hidden camera under one of the common washbasins, and newly employed guard Cam Sanford (Jai Courtney) immediately recognizes who it belongs to. The camera is Cam's sister Janice's (Kate Box), and it was smuggled to the detainees via one of the nuns who paid request visits to them. Cam never thought it necessary to search the nun's veils, but a quick internet search for possible protesters against Barton shows Clare that the nun is very much anti-refugee detention. The next day when the nun visits, Cam almost lets her through but Clare stops her just in time, asking him to dig into the roasted chicken she is carrying. Sure enough, the same camera is hidden inside the food revealing that Cam's own sister was in with the nuns, working with fellow inmates Javad (Phoenix Raei) and Rosna (Helana Sawires) to leak reports of Barton's mismanagement to the press.

'Stateless' is now available for streaming on on Netflix.
