LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: If there was a list of popular Netflix shows that have been canceled over the last few years, it would be easy to rank 'Mindhunter' near the top of it. The crime serial, directed by David Fincher, ran for two seasons on the streaming platform before suddenly ending ahead of an anticipated third season. The series stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, and it follows the founding of the Behavioral Science Unit in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the late 1970s and the beginning of criminal profiling.

In 2020, Netflix announced that the show wasn't canceled, but on indefinite hold as Fincher was busy with other projects. Fincher, who executive produced the series and helmed seven episodes, confirmed that the serial killer-centric show was ultimately too costly for Netflix. If you liked 'Mindhunter,' you can also watch 'Hannibal,' 'Hunters,'  and 'Criminal Minds'.

Fincher clarified in a recent interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche that Season 3 won't be happening, and 'Mindhunter's high cost was to blame.

“I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for Season 3],” he said. “I don’t blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.”

Regardless, Fincher's lack of resentment isn't surprising, given his longstanding relationship with Netflix. However, fans couldn't accept it. A fan said, "Loved this show !! Bad move Netflix," while another added, "netflix is about quantity not quality." A fan shared, "Hot take but the general audience probably just likes "simple" shows without depth more & more. It is just so sad. MINDHUNTER is an absolute masterpiece. I'm heartbroken it will never resume, absolutely had me on the edge of my seat. The actors delivered outstanding performances."

A fan tweeted, "but they gave big mouth six seasons and there’s no way people are watching that," while another wrote, "i still don’t understand how the budget can be so high. it is a very simple yet effective show. no over the top CGI, basic set design and casting costs shouldn’t be ridiculous. what am i missing? and to say this series doesn’t have an audience would be hearsay."
