Zack Snyder achieved a lot of success with the release of ‘Justice League’ and ‘Army of the Dead’. Both movies did amazingly well on their respective streaming platforms and enthralled the viewers with mouth-watering content. ‘Justice League’ was always poised to be a success because of the entire ‘#ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement. However, ‘Army of the Dead’ was completely a different project and if Snyder would have been unsuccessful in making a good film, then it would have been a heartbreak for his ardent fans and Netflix as well.

Fortunately, people loved the movie and it went on to become the most-watched Netflix original title with 78 million views in the first 28 days of its release. As soon as the movie came out, Snyder announced that a prequel to ‘Army of the Dead’ will be out soon and will tell how it all started. As it turns out, the movie has already been shot and is set to release later this year.

Netflix 'Army of the Dead' Ending Explained: What happened to Vanderohe during the climax?

Titled ‘Army of Thieves’, the movie takes place six years before the events of ‘Army of the Dead’, during the initial stages of the zombie outbreak, and follows Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighofer) in his early days of safecracking as he is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist with the help of a misfit crew of aspiring thieves.

The prequel is being directed by Schweighofer and is produced by Snyder, himself. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming prequel.

Release date and how to watch

The official release date for the prequel hasn’t been announced yet, but it is confirmed that the movie will get a fall release. Just like ‘Army of the Dead’, the upcoming flick will also be premiering exclusively on Netflix. Viewers can download the app from Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store to watch the movie and other projects as well.

Plot

The movie takes place prior to what happened in ‘Army of the Dead’. There will be fewer zombies in the movie and will see Ludwig trying to make a name for himself in safecracking some of the toughest vaults in the world. Audiences will also learn much more about Schweighöfer's safe cracker character.

The main plotline reads as, “In this prequel to “Army of the Dead,” a mysterious woman recruits bank teller Dieter to assist in a heist of impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.”

Spoilers

The movie will serve as a prequel to ‘Army of the Dead’. The film revolved around a team of mercenaries trying to recover $200 million from a casino vault in Las Vegas before the military deploys a tactical nuclear strike on the city due to the zombie outbreak. They get in quite easily, but everything changes when one of the team members kills the Queen zombie.

Most of the team members die during the epic fight sequences with the zombies. However, Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) managed to survive the nuclear missile attack as he was pushed into the vault by Dieter during the fight. Vanderohe survives the blast and exits the vault with the remaining money. He drives to Utah and rents a private plane to take him to Mexico City. On the flight, he discovers that he has been bitten.

The movie also featured Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Nora Arnezeder, Theo Rossi, and Tig Nataro in pivotal roles.

Cast

There is no clarity if any of the other members from ‘Army of the Dead’ will be making an appearance in the movie or not. Matthias Schweighofer will be reprising the role of Ludwig Dieter in the movie while ‘Game of Thrones’ star Nathalie Emmanuel will be introduced in the movie as Gwendoline.

TV actor and stand-up comedian Guz Khan will be portraying the character of Rolph and Ruby O. Fee will play Korina. Other actors to make an appearance in the movie include Stuart Martin (Brad Cage), Jonathan Cohen (Delacroix), and Noemie Nakai (Beatrix).

Creators

The movie is being helmed by Matthias Schweighofer and it will be his fifth feature film as a director. He has previously directed German movies like ‘What a Man’, ‘Schlussmacher’, ‘Joy of Fatherhood’ and ‘The Manny’. The story is written by Snyder and Shay Hatten. Meanwhile, Schweighofer, Zack and Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, and Dane Maag serve as producers on the movie.

Trailer

The trailer sees Gwendoline (Nathalie Emmanuel) recruiting Dieter for a dangerous job in Europe. With the world distracted by the zombie outbreak in America, this is their chance to walk away with millions of dollars by safecracking one of the toughest vaults. The trailer suggests that it will be an action-packed movie with a mix of romance and comedy. You can watch the trailer here.
