US President Donald Trump was caught in a storm of controversies as a bombshell New York Times investigative report claimed he paid just $750 in federal income taxes in 2016, the year he won the election. Citing tax return data going back over two decades, the report also alleged that he paid only $750 in his first year in the White House and he paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years.

The news spread like wildfire and several people on the Internet expressed their anger on how they paid more taxes than Trump even though he is a “billionaire.” Denying the claims, Trump said at a White House briefing Sunday that he pays "a lot" in federal income taxes. Calling the report “totally fake news,” he said, “Actually I paid the tax, and you'll see them as soon as my tax returns are done. It's under audit. They've been under audit for a long time. The IRS does not treat me well.” Although US presidents are not required to release their finances by law, every president since Richard Nixon has done so. The 74-year-old was the first major presidential candidate in four decades to refuse to release tax returns.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi soon released a statement on the New York Times report on President Trump’s tax information. “The New York Times reporting provides a window into the extraordinary measures that President Trump has used to game the tax code and avoid paying his fair share of taxes, while hard-working Americans are. This report provides further evidence of the clear need for the Ways and Means lawsuit spearheaded by Chairman Neal to access Trump’s tax returns and ensure the presidential audit program is functioning effectively, without improper influence,” she said.

Pelosi then added, “With the leadership of Representatives Anna Eshoo, Bill Pascrell, Lloyd Doggett and John Sarbanes, the House passed a requirement that presidents disclose their personal and business tax returns as part of our H.R. 1, the For The People Act.” Slamming him, she posted on Twitter: “It is a sign of President Trump’s disdain for America’s working families that he has spent years abusing the tax code while passing a GOP Tax Scam for the rich that gives 83 percent of the benefits to the wealthiest 1 percent.” Her tweet soon grabbed one too many eyeballs and collected over 4,500 retweets and more than 13,000 likes.

Soon, a string of tweets was hurled in her direction on the micro-blogging site. “Yeah, we all know Trump is S**M. Now get to work on the STIMULUS package for the working people now out of work!!! You're sitting on this too, too long!" one said and another posted, “How is this not criminal??? Impeach him again! This whole thing is indefensible. The GOP now has the crime they so desperately claimed was absent during the impeachment hearings.”

Meanwhile, many others continued to slam her. “I just gave you 2 examples of how Pelosi could stop SCOTUS. Why isn't she? Why do they vote for Trumps agenda? Hand him judges?” one tweet read. Another user said, “I COULDN’T care less about Trump’s taxes. Good grief are we at that again. I want to see taxes for Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff, Feinstein etc. I want to see Sharpton go straight to jail for all the taxes he owes.” One said, “I would also like to see the tax returns for Nancy Pelosi and the rest of those corrupt politicians who got rich off us taxpayers. I hope Trump sues the hell out of the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and everyone else involved. THIS is a Federal offense.”

“May be Pelosi can give back the money she made from the President's tax plan to the American people,” one said and another posted, “I could not care less about Trump minimizing his tax exposure as a billionaire real estate icon. I am interested in how Nancy Pelosi amassed a $100 million fortune on her government salary.” Another Twitter user posted: “Speaker Pelosi, I don't see you releasing your tax returns, and shouldn't you be investigation who in the IRS released Pres. Trump's tax returns to the NYT. Those are private records.”

As per Fox Business, Pelosi is worth an estimated $114 million, according to her 2018 personal financial disclosure, making her one of the wealthiest members of Congress. Meanwhile, Forbes reports Trump's net worth to be $2.5 billion after he became the first billionaire president of the United States in January 2017.
