'Open Biden': Nancy Pelosi says her grandkids utter 'magic words' while playing, conservatives call it 'creepy'

Conservatives mocked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after her comments during the 2021 Issues Conference while President Joe Biden was watching. Pelosi was speaking about her grandchildren and how much they loved Biden when she said "in order to open these doors we don’t say open sesame, we say open Biden. That’s our magic word."

Biden warmly acknowledged Pelosi as she introduced him via video at the House Democratic Caucus Virtual Issues Conference on Wednesday, March 3. “Nancy, I love you. There’s no one I’d rather work with than you,” Biden said, adding, “I admire the devil out of you.”

Pelosi went on to say that the United States was "blessed" to have Biden as its leader due to his “empathy, grace, and courage.”  “Now more than ever, we need a battle-tested, forward-looking leader who will fight for the people,” she said, citing his decades-long experience in Washington.

The House speaker also praised the 46th president's apparent global leadership. “President Biden is a distinguished world leader who commands the respect of allies and adversaries alike,” she said, before revealing how her grandchildren were so fond of the president. “My grandchildren have for many, many years have been long-time friends of Joe Biden... all of them love Joe Biden,” she added. 

Pelosi recalled a story about two of her grandchildren, who would use a “magic word” phrase, “Open Biden,” to open doors when they were playing games. "Kids [were] making all this noise over there on the side.  And all of a sudden, I hear them pronounce, ‘In order to open these doors, we do not say open sesame, we say 'Open Biden'. That's our magic word,'" Pelosi said. “Open Biden,” she stressed with a smile. “I love it.”

Conservatives mocked Pelosi on social media, with some calling the exchange "embarrassing" and "creepy." "Whether drunk, drugged, insane, or a combination thereof, Nancy Pelosi is currently the Speaker of the House of Representatives, second in line to the Oval Office, and completely off her rocker," writer JD Rucker tweeted. "We are a declining empire run by brainless zombies," right-wing activist Kyle Kashuv commented.

"Creepy," former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka added. "She’s really impressed by her own shit... WIT! Wit! I meant wit," congressional candidate Steve Cox wrote. "If you say 'open Biden' three times, a drone strike is launched in Syria," one Twitter user quipped. "This is so embarrassing. They have made a joke of the Presidency. Biden is treated like a child. He is babysat and humored all day while Pelosi and the rest run the country," another added.

After heaping praise on Biden, Pelosi mistakenly introduced him as the "45th President of the United States," who was, of course, Donald Trump. In response, Biden celebrated Pelosi's political career and thanked her for her friendship.

“I’ve been here a long time, and there’s been no speaker [of the house] that’s been your equal, although there have been some great speakers,” he said. “We’ve been friends a long time, and your whole family, your daughters. And it’s just been a great relationship," he added.
