House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has landed herself in a lot of hot water. At a press conference following the verdict of Derek Chavin on April 20, Pelosi bizarrely thanked George Floyd for sacrificing his life, "for justice". Pelosi's comments came at a conference hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington DC. A Hennepin County jury found Chauvin guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. His actions that led to the death of Floyd have sparked nationwide and even international protests, with Floyd becoming a symbol of racial justice. The trial has drawn widespread attention as African-Americans and Democrats have used Floyd's death to call for reforms both in policing and criminal justice.

Chauvin is one of the very few White officers to face consequences for killing a Black American and the verdict could provide a template for other cases of police brutality. In light of the verdict, Pelosi's odd comments have drawn attention away from Chauvin and even Floyd as critics say Floyd never chose to die. She told reporters, "Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice. For being there to call out to your mom. How heartbreaking was that? Because of you, thousands and millions of people around the world came out for justice. Your name will always be synonymous with justice."

Political strategist Peter Daou was one of the first to share the strange comments. He tweeted, "BREAKING: Nancy Pelosi thanks #GeorgeFloyd for being brutally murdered. This is heinous."

Shortly after the comments, Pelosi doubled down on them with a tweet saying, "George Floyd should be alive today. His family’s calls for justice for his murder were heard around the world. He did not die in vain. We must make sure other families don't suffer the same racism, violence & pain, and we must enact the George Floyd #JusticeInPolicing Act."

'Tone deaf' Pelosi

Within minutes, Pelosi's comments became a hot topic of conversation all over social media. She was widely slammed, sometimes in some not-so-kind ways, for her choice of words. Journalist Jacob Wolf said, "A Black man shouldn't have to die for us to hold racist and power-tripping police officers accountable or root them out from the system before they commit these acts. George Floyd had no intention of dying that day. Incredibly ignorant and tone deaf statement from Pelosi."

Author Frederick Joseph tweeted, "God forbid I am ever taken from this earth by a white supremacist or system of white supremacy, please don't let the people like Nancy Pelosi say I "sacrificed my life"." Another person replied, "I'm gonna give her the benefit of the doubt and say that this is dementia and not racism. Not that she isn't racist, but this is so f----- stupid."

One user commented, "Nancy pelosi saying George Floyd’s death was a sacrifice giving me real president snow in the hunger games vibes.... like what." Congressional candidate Albert Lee had even stronger words. He tweeted, "Pelosi thanking George Floyd for his "sacrifice" continues the tradition of White people in power seeing us as Black pawns on their ivory chess boards. George Floyd's life mattered before he was murdered." Another quipped, "He was murdered, Nancy."

"Nancy Pelosi is a racist moron but made it very obvious today about what she said she didn’t give a shit about George Floyds death all she wanted to do was use him," one person tweeted. Another said, "George Floyd didnt sacrifice his life for justice. He was killed by a cop who for once paid the legal price for it. Justice, as a whole, wasn’t advanced one millimeter. What an absolute tone-deaf moron Pelosi is." One social media user said: "Probably the worst thing anyone could say. This reeks of savior complex. He did not choose to die. He did not “sacrifice” himself. Shouldn’t the very verdict you said this about reflect this?"

While Pelosi's poor choice of words may have drawn some attention away, Chauvin's verdict has captured the attention of activists nationwide. Many are celebrating the verdict, while some say it isn't enough. Since Floyd's death a large number of African-Americans have been killed in encounters with the police and the cops are yet to face consequences. Nonetheless, Chauvin's verdict has given much hope that justice isn't as elusive as they thought.
