Mystery behind Novak Djokovic INHALING 'white powder' during Wimbledon match solved
Tennis enthusiasts were increasingly suspicious of Novak Djokovic's strange habit of seemingly inhaling contents from water bottles, especially after he reiterated the act in his Wimbledon quarter-final match.
The Number 1 seed, who is set to face British star Cameron Norrie for a spot in the final, has been scrutinized of late after he was seen appearing to inhale from a drinks bottle during a change of ends. The Serbian athlete mysteriously gestured towards his support crew while sitting courtside during his last-16 win over Tim van Rijthoven, before appearing to breathe in the contents of the bottle rather than drink out of it.

I would very much like to know what was in this bottle. It certainly wasn’t liquid, and he gestured to his coach before inhaling it. Very odd. pic.twitter.com/bBG62BOMFh

The 35-year-old sensation is reportedly one of many professional players who choose to take unmixed energy supplements or isotonic powder during matches. "You wouldn't really get any benefit from doing it mid-match, but I'm sure this is isotonic," a knowledgeable source told The Telegraph. "A lot of players have started eating powder, even pre-workout isotonic powder. They've started eating it without water. It's mainly pre-workout stuff because it gives them a buzz. I imagine it's disgusting in the throat. It's weird, but it is what they are doing," they added.
Isotonic powder is said to be easily digestible and replenishes carbohydrates rapidly to maintain energy levels during elite and professional tournaments. These are usually ingested by dissolving the powder in water and consumed before or during exercise to ensure maximum performance. It is recommended to be mixed with water to soften the metallic taste while also rehydrating the body. That said, the supplements vary in strength depending on the intensity and duration of exercise.
Tennis players are known to take nutritional drinks and snacks during matches, especially while going the distance to the full five sets. Djokovic himself was in a five-set game when fans noticed him squeezing something out of a plastic bottle. The Serb came back from two sets down to beat Jannik Sinner 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
It's worth noting that the top seed was also questioned about the contents of his bottle at the Australian Open two years ago. "The liquids were magic potions that my physio prepares in his lab," he joked at the time. However, Djokovic is gluten intolerant and is on a stringent diet after blood tests showed difficulties with digesting wheat and dairy. He has since promoted drinking water, smoothies, and avoiding confectionary products altogether.

The tennis star is now just two wins away from a 21st Grand Slam title after he won his 20th major at Wimbledon last year. Djokovic faces the prospect of not being allowed at the US Open due to his vaccination stance, and so the All England Club is probably the final venue this year for him to potentially reduce his deficit in the race for the most majors. He is currently 2 slams behind World No. 4 Rafael Nadal, who is set to take on Aussie Nick Kyrgios for a spot in the Wimbledon decider in the other semi-final on Friday, the Daily Mail reported.
