Michael Valva: Disgraced cop gets 25 years to life in prison for freezing 8-yr-old autistic son to death
LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Ex-NYPD police officer Michael Valva, convicted of murdering his own autistic son, was sentenced Thursday, December 8, in Suffolk County Court. Judge William Condon sentenced the disgraced police officer to 25 years to life in prison. That's the maximum sentence for second-degree murder, which he was found guilty of in November. Valva had locked his son Thomas in an unheated garage, where the 8-year-old boy apparently died overnight due to freezing temperatures.
His older brother, Anthony, 10, was subjected to the same torture, however, he managed to survive the trauma. It was found that the two kids were exposed to chilling temperatures for up to 16 hours as the mercury fell below 20 degrees. In testimony by an emergency worker who tried to save Thomas said Valva had, “no emotion, no sense of concern,” for his son. He had told the first respondent that Thomas was unconscious when he found him after he hit his head on the door frame. On January 17, 2020, the 8-year-old died of hypothermia.

Jurors were also informed that Michael had for months "beaten, starved, and mentally abused" his sons Thomas and Anthony Valva, and treated Thomas so poorly in his final moments that he should be convicted of the most serious murder allegation, reported New York Post. Attorney Raymond Tierney, Suffolk County District said on his conviction in November, “No child should ever have to endure such evil acts. This case is heartbreaking, and it has been one of the toughest child abuse trials for our prosecutors, court personnel, and jurors. While there is nothing that we can do to bring Thomas back, we are satisfied with the jury’s decision.”
In his public statement, he further said, Valva “Subjected his sons to horrific abuse, neglect, and cruelty. He will now pay for cutting short the life of a young, innocent, defenseless boy who had a lifetime ahead of him.” Michael's fiance Angela Pollina is charged too for murdering Thomas and will face a separate trial, reported New York Post.
