Meghan Markle's BFF Jessica Mulroney fired for ‘racist’ remarks, slammed as 'Trump's female version'
In light of George Floyd's death and Black Lives Matter protests, several celebrities are being canceled for their "white privilege" or racist comments. Meghan Markle's best friend Jessica Mulroney is the latest one to join the brigade after she apologized for a row with a black social media influencer on Instagram.
Writer and influencer Sasha Exeter accused Mulroney of trying to threaten her livelihood after she shared a 12-minute-long video on Instagram, calling it the "Amy Cooper Experience," in reference to a woman in New York who called cops on a black man who was bird-watching. She said Mulroney "took offense" to a generic call to action and added, "Listen, I am by no means calling Jess a racist but what I will say is this, she is very well aware of her wealth, her perceived power and privilege because of the color of her skin. And that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing."
Calling it an example of "textbook white privilege," Exeter pointed out how Mulroney's friend, Meghan, is "arguably one of the most famous Black women in the world." Mulroney apologized to her and commented on the video, "You are right when you say 'this s**t needs to stop,'" and added, "I know we have different experiences. And that is something that, even in the course of a heated argument, I need to acknowledge and understand. I am unequivocally sorry for not doing that with you, and for any hurt I caused."
However, Sasha shared a screenshot of a private message where Mulroney had written to her: "Liable [sic] suit. Good luck." Soon after, CTV released a statement confirming that Mulroney had been fired as the host of 'I Do, Redo' as she conflicted with their "commitment to diversity and equality."
In an official statement on Twitter, they said, "Bell Media and CTV encourage our entire team including on-air talent to practice respect, inclusivity and allyship as we pledge to work better and more openly to listen to and amplify black voices, and not minimize them." The statement further said, "Because recent conduct by one of our shows hosts, Jessica Mulroney, conflicts with our commitment to diversity and equality, CTV has removed ‘I DO REDO’ from all Bell Media channels and platforms effective immediately."
No sooner did the news surfaced on Twitter, it has been buzzing with a string of tweets. "This's what she wanted to do to a black single mum To take away her source of income by asking a brand she's signed with as a brand ambassador to fire her I wonder how many black people she's silenced behind the scenes and taken away their employment using her white privilege," one tweet read and another said, "Jessica Mulroney is the female version of Donald Trump Nasty, rude, smells like s**t and is full of s***n."
"White savior syndrome. Good little white girl, a true Allie," one Twitter user posted and another said, "Oops, you're canceled. if you had threatened me like that, you'd have been very sorry. repugnant little racist."
Some felt Meghan's name shouldn't have been dragged into the matter but others wondered if she had spoken out. "British media is absolute racist trash for bringing Meghan Markle into this Jessica Mulroney matter," one tweet read. "Hallelujah don't you just love Karma. Knew this was coming. So hows Meg going to play this down. You can't make this up. Your BFF is a racist who threatens people. one posted and another said, "Oh wow, Meghan Markle's Friend Jessica Mulroney Apologizes After Accusations of 'White Privilege'. @KleinfeldBridal drops her. Has Megan spoken out?"
Following the row, Mulroney posted an apology and clarification on her Instagram page, saying "it is from my heart." However, fans bashed her for the "empty words". "You haven’t owned the fact that you threatened to sue her for speaking out. Your apology means nothing if you won’t admit what you’ve done wrong. Being better means being better not just empty words," one said and another wrote, "You need to be clear. Are you publicly apologizing yet CONTINUING to threaten legal action privately?"
