Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has sparked outrage and laughs online after her latest comments on vaccine passports. At nearly a minute-long, a viral video shows the congresswoman rant against the passports, which the government is working on. She says the passports would "mandate your ability to travel, to go to events, to buy and sell". While she's not entirely wrong, her comments have been heavily criticized.

President Joe Biden's administration announced that it was working on a "vaccine passport" along with several private companies. The news has since led to massive backlash from conservatives like Greene, who's also issued multiple tweets on the matter. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced he would be signing an executive order banning the use of passports in the state. The divisive idea would allow businesses to carefully regulate who comes into their establishment while encouraging vaccination amongst the general public.

Conservatives have strongly opposed the promotion of such passports, even though several other nations have embraced them. Japan, the European Union and China are all in various stages of implementing similar passport-related and travel policies. The state of New York has also launched its own vaccine passport. The World Health Organization is also reportedly mulling a "digital certificate". However, Republicans are continuing to reject the idea.

'Something like Biden's mark of the beast?'

The video, tweeted by Right Wing Watch is made up of two parts. In the first part, Greene says, "I asked the question earlier today, is this something like Biden's mark of the beast? Because that is really disturbing, and not good." In the second half, she continues her rant saying, "it's still the same thing. It's still fascism or communism. She also adds, "I have a term for that, I call it corporate communism." You can see the full video below, tweeted by Right Wing Watch. Greene also posted a series of tweets against passports. In one, she said, "We WILL NOT COMPLY with Biden's vaccine "passports"! and in the other, "I OPPOSE Joe Biden's Chinese style tracking of Americans."

Within minutes, the tweet was swarmed with replies of people criticizing Greene's opposition. One user tweeted, "My smallpox vaccination caused a permanent scar on my left arm. The scar never ever kept me from accomplishing my life goals, indeed it kept me alive to enjoy each and everyone." Another person commented, "Whether or not something is "the mark of the beast" seems to depend entirely on if GOP donors are making money off of it or not."

Others just trolled her. One user posted, "Just wait until she finds out about driver’s licenses and passports". Another said, "So you’re telling me that, if we all get vaccine passports, I’ll be less likely to run into Marjorie Taylor Greene and those that fervently support Marjorie Taylor Greene when taking a flight or going to a theme park? I’ll take six vaccine passports, please."

Another user tweeted, "I'm honestly surprised she wasn't able to fit in other conservative talking points, like "cancel culture", somewhere in her ramblings. I'll help her out: "The airlines are trying to cancel your right to fly unsafely in this country." One person tweeted a photo of Greene with Trump, saying "Meanwhile, here’s a picture of MTG with THE actual Beast." One person tweeted, "Vaccine records have been required for schools, colleges, military service, international travel, summer camps...comply or go live in a cave. (PS..please pick cave...please pick cave)".

Vaccine passports likely to become a norm

Despite strong Republican opposition, vaccine passports are likely to become a staple of our future world. It's not an entirely new concept, such 'passports' have existed for decades. Almost all countries require the International Certificate of Vaccination, a small yellow card that details vaccinations. International travelers are required to be vaccinated against smallpox, yellow fever, and polio. Covid-19 would simply be another addition to that list.

The Biden administration is working with multiple private companies to develop a similar solution, which would be optional. On March 29, Jen Psaki told reporters that there would be no federal mandate requiring Americans to show proof of vaccination. The passports would simply be an option, similar to current CDC guidelines. She also said, "there will be no centralized, universal federal vaccinations database", which Greene later contradicts in her video.

As Covid cases are spiking all over the country, there is now a real question over the safety of reopening schools, theatres, and other indoor venues. A vaccine passport could be one way to do that, but it clearly faces an uphill task in getting accepted.
