CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: An Illinois woman is no longer facing murder charges in connection with the discovery of a decomposing body in her storage unit last year. Marcy Oglesby, 50, from Maquon, was arrested in early October after the body of Richard "Rick" Young, a former Maquon Police Department chief, was found in a storage unit rented by Oglesby at Roberts Self-Storage in Maquon.

Initially, Oglesby was charged with concealing a death. However, additional charges were added in February, including murder with a strong probability to kill or injure, attempted murder, aggravated battery by ingesting a toxic substance, and concealment of a homicidal death.

Knox County Judge Andrew Doyle dropped murder charges during a motion hearing

Knox County Judge Andrew Doyle dropped the charges during a motion hearing on March 16, according to ABC affiliate WQAD, citing a violation of Oglesby's speedy trial rights. Oglesby still faces the death concealment charge, two firearm registration violations, and two forgery charges, as per a report in Law & Crime.

Knox County State's Attorney Jeremy Karlin intends to appeal Judge Doyle's ruling to the Fourth District Appellate Court in Springfield, but as of now, there are no docketed appeals in the case.

A toxicology report revealed a high chemical level in his system

Detective Jeremy Moore testified in February that Oglesby had been in a relationship with Young, according to CBS. Young's cause of death is undetermined, but a toxicology report revealed a high chemical level commonly found in eyedrops in his system.

Young's body was formally identified by the Knox County Sheriff's Office on March 28

Young's body was formally identified by the Knox County Sheriff's Office on March 28, following an investigation that began when a suspicious smell was reported at the storage unit. Oglesby allegedly claimed the smell was a dead opossum, but when deputies looked inside, Oglesby refused to open one particular box. Eventually, she admitted that a dead man was inside.

"The Knox County Sheriff’s Office received official confirmation today that the human remains found on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 114 East 3rd Street, Maquon, are that of Richard R Young, 71 years of age, of Maquon,” a terse press release issued March 28 reads. “Mr Young’s immediate family has been notified. This investigation remains open and active. If anyone has any information on this case, please contact Knox County Sheriff’s Office.”

Oglesby's case has had several notable developments, including the dropping of the murder charges and the formal identification of Young's body. Oglesby is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on April 3.
