If you opened Twitter on December 10, 2021, you might have seen Nancy Regan and Madonna trending. It's no accident because Twitter users are busy defending the pop sensation after a conservative commentator compared the two women. The whole controversy erupted over Madonna's racy bedroom photoshoot on Instagram, which clearly irked some people.

It's not the first time the singer has courted controversy. The same day, the 'Queen of Pop' photoshopped herself into her daughter's racy photoshoot, which didn't go down well with many fans. In late November, she also got social media talking after posting some risque boudoir shots, concerning fans of hers. From the images, it seems like the singer is clearly trying to show off age isn't a concern. After all, she's still the 'Queen of Pop' at 63.

Amongst her many critics was YouTuber Abby Shapiro, the sister of controversial right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro. On December 10, Abby reacted to Madonna's racy photo with the tweet, "This is Madonna at 63. This is Nancy Reagan at 64. Trashy living vs. Classic living. Which version of yourself do you want to be?"

The photo Abby shared was one of the many Madonna uploaded to Instagram on November 26. Not only is she wearing barely-there leather lingerie, but in some photos, she's also entirely nude, covering her nipple with an emoji. It's not the only time the singer has chosen to display her assets. She flashed her nipples during an appearance at the New York City pride event in June 2021, just one of the many times she's done so in the past.

In fact, it's pretty common for Madonna to share NSFW images, so it's unclear why Abby chose to bring it up now, and focus specifically on a two-week-old shoot. But she did, and the internet wasn't going to sit idly by. Instead, it quickly rushed to the defense of the singer.

'Nancy couldn't do ray of light'

"Talk about trash. This is Madonna with her friend Keith Haring who was suffering from AIDS and would die year later. Then there's Ron and Nancy who refused to help their "friend" Rock Hudson when he asked for help to seek experimental treatment that could prolong his life," one user replied. Another noted, "Well Madonna wasn’t responsible for holding back HIV medication, sooo...." One person commented, "What this comparison neglects to add is that (a) Madonna has four more children than Nancy Reagan, (b) Madonna is very nearly a self-made billionaire: Nancy Reagan's estimated net worth was $25M. Oh, and (c) one of them is a dead homophobe: the other is neither."

"Is this supposed to make madonna look bad and nancy look good? cause it does basically the opposite," one user snapped back. Another trolled, "If you would rather be historical villain Nancy Reagan than the legendary Madonna, then I don’t want to know you." One person commented, "Madonna could do the war on drugs but Nancy couldn't do ray of light." Another slammed, "Hmmmm let's see, Madonna is a legendary artist, a noted philanthropist, and still sexy as f--k. Nancy Reagan was anti-choice, anti-ERA, and refused to help her life-long friend when he was dying of AIDS. So uh, yeah, "trashy" please."
