Spoilers ahead for 'MacGyver' Season 4 Episode 3 'Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck'

'MacGyver' Season 4 may just be three episodes in but it's already shaping up to be a great season for the show. 'Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck' takes a step away from the main plot but at no point does it feel like it's a filler episode.

This week's 'MacGyver' was a pretty solid standalone story with a strong narrative about the relationship between a father and his son, something that's a bit of a sensitive topic for Angus 'Mac' MacGyver (Lucas Till). Henry Ian Cusick, who plays Russ Taylor, had told us ahead of the episode's airing that 'Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck' would give us a more personal story for Mac and it really didn't disappoint.

Pretty much all the characters show a lot of growth in this episode with Russ himself learning to accept that Matty Webber (Meredith Eaton) might be better at actually running an op than he is. Wilt Bozer (Justin Hires) gets to shine as well, risking his life and taking down an assassin and it was nice to see him finally get some action after being more or less on the sidelines for the first two episodes.

It doesn't stop with them. Desi Nguyen (Levy Tran) too showed some growth in this episode, mending her relationship with Mac and choosing to be best friends again even if they are not together anymore. Comparatively, Riley Davis (Tristin Mays) is the one member of the team who doesn't get much to do on her own but that's still excusable.

Of course, the show is called 'MacGyver' and he is the one with the biggest developments of all. After helping a child and his father, Mac finally seems to be warming up to his dad and it looks like he might be ready to mend fences, especially considering he retrieves his father's leather jacket at the end of the episode, bringing back the iconic MacGyver look. It was a short respite from the grand conspiracy that's been driving the plot this season but we are glad for it and we will be back again next week, more excited than ever.

'MacGyver' Season 4 airs new episodes every Friday at 8/7 c only on CBS.
