Nicole Kidman's niece Lucia Hawley has taken a stand against the social media trend of using beauty filters in pictures that she insists is damaging.

The 24-year-old author, who bears an uncanny resemblance to her actress aunt, recently penned a passionate column highlighting the dangers of beauty filters. The article was proudly shared by her mother on Instagram Stories. Lucia, the daughter of Nicole's sister Antonia, did not hold back as she wrote candidly about the pressures of appearance on major social platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.

"The toxic impact of social media filters: A beauty trend that needs to go," Lucia headlined her Nine Honey column, alongside a photo of herself both with a filter and without to highlight the difference between the two. "The beauty filter contoured my face and nose, made my eyes bigger and lighter. It was a new me," she wrote. Lucia conceded that she "looked better" but noted why it was a huge problem. "Beauty standards have always been problematic. But in the age of the selfie it's a whole different ballpark, because we are now competing with a CGI-enhanced version of ourselves," she explained.

Lucia also mentioned the likes of Kim Kardashian, Demi Lovato, and Bella Hadid in her article, which documented how damaging filters can be to society. "I should point out that cosmetic surgery is not the 'devil' and people should be able to choose what they want to do to their appearance. But is it truly an authentic choice if the reason you are altering yourself is so you can adhere to unattainable beauty standards?" she added.

Lucia recently chimed in on botox use and the aging process. "I was told by one of my friends the other day that I should start having 'preventative' Botox, because, 'If you start now, then you can stop wrinkles in their tracks.' I was astonished," she wrote in another column. "I have nothing against getting Botox, but to be recommended it at 23 is seriously alarming. It's like showing any signs of aging is admitting defeat."

Lucia also noted there's an "unspoken expiry date for women" and quoted her famous aunt's thoughts on the issue. "There's a consensus in the industry that as a female actor, at about 40, you're done," Nicole reportedly in an interview with Dujour. Her niece added, "I never sat in a chair and heard someone say, 'You're past your due date,' but I've had times where you're turned down and the door is shut on you." She said she was inspired by her journalist mother who "defied societal expectations" by studying law at age 45.

In 2021, Lucia revealed that she is joining the family business and spoke to Stellar Magazine about working in film production. "I'm working for a production company on a documentary, which is really cool – and currently confidential, so I can't discuss too much about that," she said, adding, "It's been interesting working in a full-time capacity, compared to studying. And just kind of going, 'OK, I've got to dedicate myself to this because this is the real deal.' It's fun and kind of daunting at the same time."
