'Lovecraft Country' Ending Explained: Who is dead and who is alive? Here's what that magical finale means

The HBO show just culminated its 10-episode first season and while we can't be sure if the character deaths were certain, here's how it worked out for the leads

The ending of HBO' 'Lovecraft Country' led to a future without the man who had started it all - Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors). But there was an Atticus in the not so distant future, meaning Letitia Lewis' efforts were not for nothing. And as the entire fandom mourns the loss of the leading man and cries about Leti doing the utmost at every adventure and still losing the two people closest to her, here are some of the silver linings from the finale that Episode 10: 'Full Circle' was.

The finale happens after Hippolyta Freeman has cured her daughter Diana aka Dee's arm by amputating the cursed bit with a robotic one. The family then packed their bags, and with Ji-Ah in tow, travel to Ardham on the Autumnal Equinox. The only catch here is that the Ruby accompanying them on the road trip is actually Christina.

What happens to the real Ruby, you ask? Christina betrayed her one last time at the altar, but unlike Tic, we don't know for certain if Ruby is alive or just in a coma she was put in by Christina to take on her body. Christina can be seen murdering Ruby explicitly, but considering Leti came back alive from THAT tower fall, anything is possible.

The same, unfortunately, can't be said for Tic. Christina hoists the man upon the altar with a little help from her goons before slashing his wrists and bathing herself in his blood. It's the same ritual Samuel Braithwaite had attempted before getting stoned and crumbling to pieces in the fire lit during the Freemans and Leti's first trip to Ardham. Only this time it's too late before Tic can be stripped off the altar.

Christina gains immortality and laughs like a raging maniac once the ritual is successful. Her thrill however is short-lived, as she too, dies in the end. Christina's death comes at the hands of none other than Dee, with a little bit of help from Leti and Ji-ah. After Tic dies, Ji-Ah picks up his lifeless body and Leti uses his flesh and blood to invoke the deadly magic she had been taught by his ancestors.

Leti uses Tic as the Braithwaite bloodline to work the incantation and causing the manor to collapse on top of Christina, who lies grappling for life under a pile of rubble. In the final moments of the show, Dee chokes the life out of the Braithwaite heiress, thus avenging her possible half-brother's death. The ending can't be explained without noting that there was a glimpse of Tic in the future epilogue segment of the finale but there's a high chance it's all a set up for a Season 2 where Tic's son George Freeman takes the center stage and is most likely played by Majors himself.

'Lovecraft Country' Finale aired on Sunday October 19, at 9 pm on HBO.
