'Love After Music' on Netflix: Meet Argentine music artist Fito Paez's muse Cecilia Roth
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA: Cecilia Roth, real name Cecilia Edith Rotenberg Gutkin, is an Argentine actress renowned for being an 'Almodóvar girl' and the muse of Argentine musical artist Fito Páez during the 1990s. She became Páez's muse for one of the best-selling albums in national rock history, 'Love after Love'. Cecilia's most famous roles in movies are known for being tender odes to femininity, motherhood, and the female experience.
Netflix is releasing a biographical series called 'Love After Music' based on the life of Fito Páez, which is anticipated to depict the highs and lows of the artist's life. Actress Cecilia Roth plays a significant role in his life both personally and professionally, as she not only 'completed' him but also inspired him. So, it can be expected that she will be featured in the series showcasing the audience on how their whirlwind romance helped Fito Pàez to make one of his biggest selling albums.

'It was love, it was a mess'
When Roth appeared in Pedro Almodóvar's 'Laberinto de pasiones' in 1982, she caught the attention of Fito Pàez and the two met by chance at a bar but the actress was supposed to wed Gonzalo Gil in 1989 and she did but just nine months after the marriage, she ran into Fito yet again at a costume party at her place and the two of them started chatting and she realized she liked him as much as he liked her but she was married. Fito had also ended his relationship with Fabiana Cantilo, whom he had met because they both worked in the music industry.
In an interview, the actress explained that it was a mess because she was married, but it was love. She felt she was supposed to be with him. The very next day Fito called Cecilia and sang a bolero for her, and the actress decided to divorce her husband Gonzalo Gil. Fito mentioned Cecilia Roth changing his life in one of his interviews, adding that all the color of that relationship remained in his last LP. 'Love after Love' was inspired by Cecilia Roth's decision to leave her husband and pursue an illicit relationship with the musician.
But not all love is meant to last
Cecilia Roth went on her career as an actress and had a breakthrough performance in Almodóvar's classic 'All About My Mother (1999)' which won the Academy Award for best foreign film. As a sign of their romance, Páez makes a brief cameo appearance in the film, applauding the performance of Manuela (played by Roth), who improvises a role as an actress. The couple married in a formal ceremony in 1999 and adopted their son Martin, but they divorced in 2002. Roth and Pàez were working on Fito's film 'Vidas privadas' when they began to drift apart due to an unusual change in circumstances.
Despite public expectations that they would reunite, the musician got together with Romina Ricci and had a daughter named Margarita shortly after. Cecilia and Fito later reconciled and became close friends over the years. Roth was invited by Páez to a recital in Buenos Aires in 2022 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of 'El amor después del amor'. Roth has worked in theater in Argentina and Spain, in addition to her film and television careers. She is currently working, together with Darío Grandinetti, on the Philippe Blasband play, 'Una relación pornográfica'.
